Bioware dissapoints me GREATLY with this kind of copy protection and what really doesn't make sense is it's on a FREE DLC (bring down the sky)!

Now I can't install BDtS and I don't want to contact EA just to have them reset their bull**** activation limit for a free DLC.

To Bioware & EA: I hope you know that this **** just turns paying customers like me in to pirates. I certainly won't be paying for Pinnacle Station.

**** the both of you.

Well I don't think you want help and I hope ranting has made you feel better. Having recently gone experianced the BTS copyprotection issue myself I can understand the frustration, but honestly don't you think your post is just a little bit 'too hostile'.

Some points from my own experiance,

Contacting EA's Tech Support via email took four days before I recieved a response. Having said that the response was positive in that they reset the install limits. Unfortunately because they took four days, and nothing was sent to me saying that they were looking into the matter, I picked up another copy of ME1. Now I'm not unhappy about this, because ME1 is my favorite game and having a backup copy is great, however I do feel that BiowarEA could have handled this situation a tad bit better.

In particular, ME1 DLC should be tied to the EA deautheticator, so when you use that tool to deauthorise the game, the DLC is deauthorised as well. Information about the copy protection being on the DLC should have been made availible in the first place. This is where they messed up in my opinion. They are perfectly entitled to protect their game, but they should have communicated how they were doing so with the end user better.

Not that it helps any, but from my understand the ME2 DLC is going to use the same model as DA:O in that it's tied to your account, not your computer. This in my own opinon is a lot better method of doing it.

you have to go to http://store.bioware.com/my_account/ to get your access code for BDtS, EA is not responsible for supporting that DLC, only Pinnacle Station. I had the same problem when I had to reinstall ME.
Edit - NM, thought it was purely an access code issue, not sure if it would help for installation limit.

No, they are responsible. BDTS has the same lifetime activation scheme as Pinnacle and the retail version of ME1.

Did you have to re-format/re-install windows ..

In the future, all you have to do is DL the De-Authorization tool from EA for whatever game and run it before you format . You'll get your activations back.

Ive re-installed ME with the BDTS and pinnacle station at least 8 times this way with no issue

 Its not so bad really.

Hi jess05,

Unfortunately this is where you are wrong. The De-Authorization tool doesn't deauthorize the DLC content, it only deauthorises the main game. So what happens is that eventually, you will end up unable to play the DLC (I know this happens for sure with Bring down the Sky, unsure about Pinnicle Station) because BiowarEA have placed limits on the number of times the DLC can be reinstalled.

So if you want to replay your old characters through the main game again, you either have to a repurchase the DLC ($US5.00 in the case of PS, the entire game in the case of BDTS) or politely ask EA to give you some more activations on the DLC. As I said in my intial post, EA support can take up to four days to get back to you, but when they did I had no problems getting an activation back.

Thankfully ME2's DLC wont have the same problems.

Did Bioware ever tell us that the BdtS dlc had a limited number of activations.

Not to my knowledge, and as far as I am aware, nothing was mentioned about limited amounts of activations on the PS dlc either. I imagine given all headaches DLC is giving them across the board at the moment, that Bioware is beginning to wish they never started to make it available in the first place. Hopefully things will settle down on the DLC front soon.

I'm not sure Bioware themselves are fully on top of what's up with ME1 DLC. Before purchasing ME1, I asked on the old forums about whether the DLC used the SecuROM activation (wondering whether I'd have to deal with it despite purchasing from Steam), and was told by someone from Bioware it was not. :/

Maybe you are right Raven and I just haven't encountered it yet.

I can say I know I get the activation back for ME itself ... of course it never says anything at all about the DLC remaining activations.

I re-install my OS often due to beta programs, other testing  etc .. usually every couple weeks
I know its been at least 6-7 times doing this and havent had a issue.

So, if they in fact do have a limit on the DLC, Im likely to be having the same issue soon.

I do apologize for my original post. I was extremely frustrated with the whole situation. It's just that I paid $50 for Mass Effect and then they put an activation limit on the game? How has EA not realized yet that no matter what kind of copy protection you have, pirates will ALWAYS find a way around it. All this does is hurt paying customers. I'm a computer enthusiast, I'm changing hardware all the time. So you can imagine that reinstalling Windows is something very common for me.

The activation limit on a game I paid for is only slightly annoying, what's annoying is an activation limit for a DLC that was and still remains, free for PC users.

I should not have to email EA just so I can play a game that I own and I certainly should not have to crack a game I legitimately own just so I can play the game without having to deal with EA. I don't have to call Samsung every time I want to turn my TV on, or anything else for that matter.

bump for an important topic.

did they get this fixed?

Any chance a mod or other vip could bring this up to EA? Seems like an easy fix for something that would cause rage from paying customers.

Also, do we get 3 or 5 activations for the DLC. I think we get 5 for the main game.

As far as I know it's still the same (can't remember whether it's a 3 or 5 install limit, but I'd guess 5 since they upped the main game). I believe you're supposed to be able to get more BDTS activations from EA support just like with the main game, but that's the only route remaining once you run out of activations.

1.  This is not the Mass Effect 1 forum.

2.  It is now OFF TOPIC here, and has been since fairly shortly after the ME-2 game release.

I agree that Point 1 is correct but point 2 is not, it is not an off topic subject since it is a an issue that pc owners of ME1 can/still (and most likely will) have since it was never once mentioned that the dlc has limited activations (or anyway of revoking it other an (potentially) expensive phone call or an email that could take ages to be responded to).

The subject is only "topical" when it is being discussed in the correct ME-1 forum.

Your point 1 is taken if you are the 1st reply. You are the 15th post in a thread with a lot of good information. 5months late buddy.

Get lost. If you have nothing to contribute, don't post.
