So we got some new spoilers on varric pretty huge ones to say the least and I should say he needs his own topic. 

 

Varric being corrupted by the lyrium shard if you hand it to him in DA2 here is his card.

Varric will become irredeemably insane if you let him keep the red lyrium fragment from DA2. You’ll have to kill him or his corpse becomes a mindless puppet of a demon that has possessed Bianca, allowing you to keep his hideous form as a party member to the disgust of some of your other party members

Hawke appears and is about to be executed for Anders’ crimes from the previous game. You can save him and recruit him into the Inquisition or let him die. A non-insane Varric that was friends with Hawke will leave your party if you don’t try and save Hawke

 

So what do all of you think? I see a lot of heartbreak in the future of those who let him keep the shard.

It's no surprise that the red lyrium shard would be bad news. That's some pretty damn serious bad news though. It seems maybe a little over the top to me?

Well it fits within what we know of the red lyrium anders notes what happened to Bartrand was akin to spirit possession and lets not forget Varric putting the shard into his crossbow which he has been carrying around for a long time now. Lets not forget how it mutates red templars into beings that look like abominations. 

 

Plus red lyrium appearing in conclave after the breach and according to anders red lyrium is not exactly nice to the veil. Personally I can never let varric have the thing and if Anders is with you he tells you to get rid of it as well it just smells of really bad news like you said. 

 

Funny thing is someone on youtube this comment is 8 months ago mind you someone wondering if they should let Varric keep the shard and someone responded that varric puts it in his crossbow and it gives him three rune slots. 

 

They went oooh that sounds awesome and then he repsondes afterwards saying its most likely going to bite you in the ass during inquisition. Then the person said that is a good point and decided against it. XD

I think keeping around a possessed Varric!husk is what's keeping me from believing it. That seems a little... grotesque? Although they may be trying to go darker with DAI than the other DA games (which were plenty dark in their own ways).

Well you can sell the soul of conner to a demon in DAO you can do it multiple times actually does not seem quite out there. Lets not forget night terrors as well giving a dreamer to a demon of all things, plus it fits the card. 

 

Plus watching the Haunted mission again I think the shard is singing to Varric since he says things that are quite out of character. It shows even more if you are rival with Varric I will note down the rival conversation with the shard at the end of the house

 

"What are you afraid of Hawke? That I might end up with more power than you? That would kill you wouldn't it?" 

 

While with friendship he is trying to convince Hawke that he can handle it trying to appeal to his friendship. 

 

After you get rid of it Varric even notes afterwards that had no idea what came over him

Yeah, you can give people to demons but none of them are companions. Varric losing his mind because of the red lyrium shard definitely fits the card though. I suppose keeping him around possessed makes more sense than keeping him around mad and the card didn't have an X over it.

Yeah because considering how insane you become with the darn thing looking at what Bartrand did stuffing lyrium down please throats and all sorts of other madness. It will make him a liability hence why you have the choice to kill him(to give him peace) or have the whatever it is inside his crossbow basically taking the "wheels" so to speak. 

 

Man this makes the red templars even more scary considering its only a shard that is doing this varric who knows what the templars have to deal with.

Well, I must say despite how awful this is, I'm very glad that the game seems to be going all-out with consequences. You let your friend keep something demonic to get stats? Yep, that's not gonna be free at all.

On the one hand, I'm very glad both my canon games are no shard, and on the other, I can't wait to import one of the few games where I gave him the shard so I can see it.

And the other spoiler is not really about Varric, because that is one obvious reaction, but about being able to kill Hawke. Alas, I'm sure that will make a lot of people happy, but I'm happy we can save her/him.

Well in the Varric thread some people are changing around keep choices since they don't want to deal with the shard since its too tragic. XD

 

Still I would find it hard to even watch on the youtube personally since I really like Varric as a character.

The default on the Keep is no shard. It must be the one they carry over, because it makes no sense for a newcomer to deal with that baggage. They would feel punished for decisions they never made.

Makes sense still its quite some effort for something not everyone will get to see,not that that is a bad thing

I'm genuinely surprised about this, if only because Varric is so popular/likeable. 

 

I think I only gave him the lyrium once, but it was a "WTF do I care about anything?" Hawke and is in a world state I won't import until playthrough six or seven. If it's as awful as it sounds, I might change it. Varric is way up there in characters I love, so seeing him like that is very much a nope! scenario for me.

This stream also has the corrupted lyrium card for Varric. It's about an hour and thirty eight minutes in. Unfortunately, I have no idea what's being said.

Yes. I don't speak Czech either, but Varric did show up prior to the card being shown and he still seemed alright (and a great friend of Hawke's ). I haven't finished the video yet though - Twitch sucks.

The guy actually selects Varric for the Orlesian Ball quest and Varric seems fine there too. Maybe whatever happens to Varric will only happen once the red lyrium plot is coming to a close?
