@RangerSG- no, your argument was that I shouldn't recruit my companions because half of them would die. You don't know that. My response to you was based upon metagaming knowledge. I don't know which characters would live, my point is that it doesn't matter who lives. Gaining any of them would be an improvement over the current situation. We're going to have to agree to disagree here, because we're clearly not going to see eye-to-eye on the issue.

I rather like the idea of conscripting Ser Cauthrien. She is so ridiculously overpowered, she could probably solo the Archdemon all by herself.

Well, I'm certainly aware that if I (or my pc to be technical) conscript my companions and have them go through the Joining - some of them may die. There is no reason to assume 50% - we have no figures on which to base such an assumption, that's been hammered out elsewhere. They could all survive - or all die. There is no way to know. Would I, as a GW, be willing to take that chance? Yes. Clearly, LostScout would too. Perhaps others would not.

Now at Landsmeet we are aware that we need Grey Wardens, but not yet aware of the only a Grey Warden can permanently kill the Archdemon thing. However, Riordan IS aware of that. Hence, possibly, his willingness to consider Loghain. He should, logically, be all for the idea of a number of new recruits.

It could make for an interesting option, then, yes? Let's say we have enough blood for 5 (to pick a number that is neither vastly large or too small, and gives odds of someone surviving) companions and/or npcs to be made Grey Wardens. Who would they be?

[Edit: Oh and it's Riordan. Say it after me - Riordan. Let's repeat it again - Riordan.]

I'd say Anora and Isolde, because they'd have a cat fight over the final blow that would annoy even the nearly-deceased Archdemon enough for him to rear up one last time and eat them both in a single chomp. Then I can sacrifice Loghain and live happily ever after.

Hehe. I like it. But that's still only 3 (if we accept that you've also conscripted Loghain).

I think I would convince Gregior, Irving & Arl Eamon to go through the joining.

Morrigan seems the best chance of surviving a joining. After all, she can handle arch-demon bun in her oven, a little gobblet of blood would be nothing.

Why recruit someone who wouldn't even manage another 30 years without the joining?  Recruit young!

Well, keep in mind you'd have to have somebody who'd be a) willing (and let's face it, it's obvious it's gonna suck to be a Grey Warden with an archdemon battle coming up, even if you don't know exactly what it takes to kill an archdemon)...

Actually, thanks to the Grey Wardens' right of conscription, they needn't seek the willing. My human noble character, Brody, unwillingly joined their ranks.

I second conscripting Isolde. "Archdeeeeeeeeeeeeamon! Archdeeeeeeeeeeeeeeamon!" I bet the Archdemon wouldn't want to keep coming back to life to face that.

You can only make Loghain a Grey Warden because the power of Plot compels you!

It's pretty clear that younger candidates are better (a younger body is more resilient, so a young man is more likely to survive the joining), but if you want to sacrifice yourself, then an old man would do too.

You got whole armies assembled, all of which consider becoming a Grey Warden a great honor. There's no shortage of recruits. Even if you were to tell them all GW secrets, there would be no shortage or recruits. Plenty of people would still be willing.

Loghain took the vial of Archdemon blood from the vault anyway, didn't he? Riordan presumed that he did.

well we really dont know about all of that as players. all we know is that prior to the landsmeet, there was no way to create new grey wardens.

but afterwards, riordan was ale somehow to find a way to conscript. otherwise we wouldn't have the loghaine option.

it's just odd that he doesn't try to recruit more people other than loghaine.

So I get, what, two more?  Then Teagan so that I can rebuild the Gray Wardens with him (as Al would have already left me over the Loghain thing) and the head of the Legion.  That man knows what he's doing and he's got to have been exposed to the taint, so he'd be more likely to survive the Joining.

The only reason I wouldn't recruit Teagan is because he's going to have to have to be the next Arl. I don't see Eamon croaking anytime soon, but he's obviously quite a bit older than Teagan. Since Connor can't inherit, that leaves Teagan and I need nobility on the Wardens side. (My PC is also secretly in lust with him and doesn't want him to die young, but that's another matter. ;) )
