Why is the minimap just an empty circle?

Just as the title says, every stream I watched and in every screenshot the minimap is just an empty circle. Why? It looks terrible and quite useless. Is it that hard to make an ACTUAL minimap?

I have to agree that the lack of roads on the minimap frustrates me a little bit because my sense of direction is terrible so I can see myself going around in circles a LOT. But I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it and you can always bring up the full map and see where you're headed.

Well BioWare initially had the Skyrim compass, but as to not completely copy BGS and try to be somewhat unique and different, they made a worthless minimap instead. It certainly will not be of any use when exploring the game. I would have preferred the compass and a large map like Skyrim.

It was said in one of the streams that the reason they picked an empty Mini-Map, was to show you the location of objectives, enemies and friendies, without all the clutter of Terrain, I disagree.

While yes it does what they intended, I'm sure I can speak for most people when I say we have all grown accustomed to have Mini-maps in games detail terrain for us aswell.

So I can see myself going around in circles a LOT.

^^ As can I.

It will take some time getting use to thats for sure.

Yep, I definitely prefer the regular minimap with all the roads and terrain. Saying that terrain clutters it is just a very poor excuse.

I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I'll be finding a lot of those hidden areas by getting lost and stumbling into them.  Anything underground, I'll be checking the main map at every intersection.

I too am directionally challenged.  I lead a party in an mmo to their doom over a cliff.   From that day on I was known as 'WrongWay Tay'  Tay being short for Tayleaja my character.

Do we get the direction of objectives? Can we select a way point and have it's direction shown in the minimap? I don't mind the lack of terrain details. I think I actually like it.

And even if we can't see the direction of objective sI think I'll be OK. It might sound weird, but I like relying on the actual location in order to figure out where to go. I played AC3 without mini-map stuff and it was quite fun. You actually pay attention o the world, instead of ignoring the roads and cutting straight to the objective, in a straight line given by the minimap.
