Finally played through the Sealed Chantry, so here is an FYI for those who are nervous about entering the Chantry:

Price to Enter

The consequences are visited at the end game, when the Divine arrives.  At that time you will have options to placate the Divine:

a. Lie (Cunning check) and cover your tracks (failure - see below)

b. Repent (Scholarship check) to lose 2 favor (failure - see below)

c. Give the Divine something which you had the option to obtain at the end of the Sealed Chantry quest

d. Defy the Divine (the Divine will curse your family as "The Shame" for 3 more generations)

-If you fail a or b, you will lose 5 each of secrets, viands, & trophies to pay for your crime. [needs confirmation]

-If you play the game with diligence, you should have plenty of trophies/viands/secrets to satisfy the Divine at the endgame, rendering the consequences irrelevant.

Why to Enter

Here are the two I have encountered

1: After unlocking the door and entering the Chantry, there is an option to loot the Chantry for Bags of Royals.

2: You will receive lore relevant to Serault (bringing 60 clues and 6 extra actions will allow you to view all the lore)

How to Enter

-It will take at least 6 actions to accomplish the Sealed Chantry quest line, including a skill check in every stat except rulership:

Action 1: Unlocking Door, three options:

a. Cunning skill check

b. Order personal guard to break down door (4 authority)

c. Bard can open door for free if he is your lover*

Action 2: Enter Chantry (no check)

Action 3: Scholarship check

Action 4: Derring-Do check (failure = -20 or -30 health - amount unconfirmed)

Action 5: Woods-wise check

Actions 5a-5f: There are six information gathering options at this point.  All of these cost 10 clues and 1 action each, and will grant progress towards a skill level up.  These are completely optional and just to help you prepare for Action 6.  You can do all of these or none of these.  I believe you can also repeat them indefinitely until you perform Action 6, although there is little reason to do so as they are not cost efficient for raising skills.

Action 6: Make a decision (no check)

*If you plan to unlock the Sealed Chantry with the Bard, there is no reason not to do this as soon as it is available - there is no risk of failing and you do not have to immediately proceed to any further action.

I did not fail any of these checks, so I cannot comment on the consequences of failing any particular step.

Hope this helps.  If anyone has more spoiler-free tips to share, especially related to failing any of the checks, please chip in.

+Added option b to Divine encounter per Devil's Avocado

+Added health penalty on Action 4 per Youaman

+Added option c to Divine encounter per Mykel54

+Added option b to Action 1 per AnUnculturedLittlePotato and Devtek

+Added option d to Divine encounter per Devtek

Failing action 4 results in a loss of health, either 20 or 30, but it's been two days so I can't remember exactly.

-The consequences are visited at the end game, when the Divine arrives.  At that time you will have an option to lie (Cunning check) and cover your tracks, or lose trophies to pay for your crime.  It is still possible to get the best ending if you confess and have enough secrets/trophies/viands.  I do not know the consequences for attempting to lie and failing or if that spoils the ending (anyone advise?)

I'm unsure whether this is spoilerish or not but I'll mention some more detail

Another way of placating the Divine after entering the chantry

Hoping for general advice - is going through with this worth it? Or is it just an extra bit of lore we can mull over at the expense of displeasing the Divine?

I believe it's just extra lore and likely not "worth it" from a gaming standpoint.  There is an opportunity to loot the Chantry to earn some bags of royals (perhaps inciting more displeasure) between Actions 2 and 3 that I did not exploit.

Not even extra lore, just something to kill time will your hype grows still stronger.

I appreciate the humor and agree that this game only exists to feed on our pre-release anxiety, however there is lore relevant to Serault obtainable in this quest line.  Will add a short blurb about choosing to enter to the original post.

Does unlocking the door have any consequences?
Can I do only step one with no ramifications. Also there's a third option to swear someone to secrecy with a rulership check and 4 authority, is it a trap or...?

Unlocking the door will trigger the end-game consequences.

I have never seen the third option you mention; this is to unlock the door?  Is it using a particular advisor/lover/accomplice/bodyguard?

"Order your household guard to break down the door

You can swear your Chevalier-Commander to silence. Perhaps."

It is a rulership check.  I think it might be only there if you are a scholar? Costs 4 authority and 1 action.

I'm a scholar as well, so that may be true.

So unlocking the door is the trigger, it doesn't matter if you go in or not?

That is my understanding, yes. The Divine's assistant will notice that the door has been tampered with regardless of your entering.

Does not opening the Sealed Chantry completely lock out the player for learning any of the lore? I suppose you'd need two playthroughs to know, but thought I'd ask nevertheless.

d. None of the above and lose viands/trophies/secrets to pay for your crime.

Anyone know how many viands/trophies/secrets? Thanks heaps for the guide!

Well once the divine rolled around I defied her because of the chantry before I could get any favor and the game ended right away. She cursed me but I still got a "very satisfactory" ending without actually having to appease the divine lol.

I have heard that the Divine will give you the keys to the Chantry if she is pleased and you haven't previously opened it, however I do not know if that is just part of the ending text or if you would actually get to explore it before the game ends.

I haven't done this so I don't know.  In searching this forum, I found some poorly documented comments on it (one person said they lost "about half," another person said opening the Chantry cost them 5 favor (which would be equivalent to 5 sets of 3 = 15 total secrets/viands/trophies.)

+edit: found another post that said it costs 5 each of secrets, viands, and trophies.  this seems to make the most sense based on the other posts I read, so that's what i'm putting in the guide above

How much cunning is needed to get close to 100% success rate for lying to the Divine? I'm still trying to decide whether or not to break into the chantry, and I don't want to risk losing 15 SVT from the Divine, as I'm uncertain if I will have enough to spare and still get the best ending.

I think you need 100 cunning, because i had around 80 and still did not have 100% chance.

Like i said a couple of posts above, I had a completely different option at the end of the game, there was none to spend stuff to get forgiveness.  I had the "lie" "repent" "give thing found in chantry to Divine" options (although the giving was not clickable because I didn't imprison it.  The other option I had, the one I chose (because I thought it was the one to spend trophies etc) actually straight up ended my game, was called "Defy"

Perhaps the "lose 5 of each" option is actually the consequence for failing the Cunning or Scholarship checks?
