The first few screenies I was like, "Whaaa ..." and planning on removing the thing first off.  But the more I watch his character moving through the world state, the more the thing is growing on me.  It's not that bad and it fits with Cole's pretty unique personality, I think.  Maybe that's why I'm starting to like it, though.  It definitely FITS Cole.

There is a concept art piece where he is wearing a hood though, looks pretty cool.

Maybe you can customize his armor so he won't have to wear that hat or something? But I'm not sure if they included it in the game.

I hope so for those that dislike the scarecrow look.

In Asunder, you find out Cole was a young Mage who was brought to the White Spire in Val Royeaux. The Templars who were supposed to watch over him and protect him, instead neglected him and he died due to neglect. Prior to his death, he was contacted by a Spirit from the Fade. In DA:I, that Spirit is "Cole". However, I am not sure how Cole went from a Mage to a Rogue.

I think someone said that Cole will ALWAYS wear the hat even if you equip a different helmet? Or maybe they just meant he would always have it on in skyhold even if you have unequipped it. Personally, I like the hate. It is quirky and I like quirky.
