So,
I lost my saves from ME1 and am wondering what the starting is like
with ME2 from starting without a save. Mainly, what are the things you
are asked to set up ME2? Is there a quiz of some sort where your
answers reflect who lived or died?
If not, Im very tempted to play
through ME1 again even though my copy of ME2 will be sitting right
beside me. making things worse :/

From what I have heard, the default character in ME2 has a few predetermined choices (I belive the Council dies by default) and others that the player can decide depending on the responses they make to certain characters regarding events that happend in the first game.

You get to make the big decisions again AFAIK. But you will miss out on all the small sidequests and squad member conversations (like letting Garrus kill the scientist or you do it instead). All this little things shape your story.

If I were you, I'd play through it again and start ME2 1 or 2 days later with my story.

From the Best Buy live chat with Casey Hudson:

Guest-73: Is it possible for imported Shepherds to change history when asked questions about the past, 1984 style?

CaseyH-ME2: There's some confusion about how the game sets your "canon" for the backstory. One report said that you just answer some questions to set what has happened - not true...

CaseyH-ME2: The way it works is that if you import an ME1 character, that sets all the backstory details of what has happened so far. If you start from scratch, there is a set of default events that work better for new players to the ME universe....

CaseyH-ME2: Then, when you get through the intro, you have a conversation where you are asked a few questions - if you are in an imported character, they're just testing your memory and will tell you if your answer is wrong. But if you have a new character, you are able to set some last details through the answers to your questions.
