Just look at how the Idol drive Bartrand mad...I think you can figure what could happen to Varric if you hand him the Red Lyrium shard. If you want to preserve your experience unspoiled then you better not ask and it's high time people should go dark if they want to avoid spoilers. This one is rather a major spoiler.

You'll get the option at the very end of his personal quest in Act 3 when you investigating haunted mansion with him.

You keep the Red Lyrium Idol for Varric in Dragon Age 2, then, in Dragon Age Inquisition, you either have to:

 

1. Kill him, because he goes insane and banish the demon

2. Let the Red Lyrium demon of Bianca, his dead lover, possess his body, in turn, having him become a demonic-possessed Varric, in turn, having all your other companions take a hit to their affection for you a decent amount.

 

Those 2 options are practically confirmed, I've heard it from more than a single source now.

 

But what is 100% confirmed is, that, if you do decide to keep the Red Lyrium idol for Varric in DA2 that he starts to go insane because of it, just like his brother. This was confirmed with his leak, updated companion card that you get at some point in the game, later down the line, showing Red Lyrium surrounding Varric and him kneeling in pain from the corruption.

I wonder if "Demon Bianca/Varric" is worth a playthrough and not just "you chose poorly". A willing "demon" in your party should be interesting. I hope it has a developed personality or perhaps even a backstory to tell.

I'll be playing one playthrough with possessed Varric. I want to see how everything will come out and what will happen.... It should be interesting story
