Same roleplay wise I could never think of a good reason to let him keep the thing. It is clearly effecting him at the end of Haunted, it makes people go insane and it weakens the veil.
Thing is pretty much shining a red light that its bad news.

Nope, the only "cure" is to go back into the Keep and choose not to give him the piece of red Lyrium.
Has anyone encountered this in game yet? I have looked through the guide and even on his personal quests and am not seeing it yet, though it could be on a side quest or something in the main quest line that I missed.

This isn't really a spoiler though, I mean we all saw what happened to bartrand.
I still half-expect this to turn into another "Cerberus turning evil in the third game" backlash even though the writing was clearly on the wall.
The big difference is that this is entirelly optional and many people got rid of the red lyrium so will never see this outcome. On the other hand, you had no say in what Cerberus did in ME3.
Out of curiosity, how many people gave him the Red Lyrium and what did they think was going to happen?

I gave him the shard in one game because i hoped he would store it somewhere, and later on it could serve to find out what red lyrium really is. I also thought that if Varric had it stored, instead of waving it around or putting it on Bianca (what he did), it would not be a threat or be a very minor thing. It could be worth the risk in order to learn more about the idol and red lyrium.
