Honestly, I haven't seen any mods that really impressed me so far. Skyrim's OK without mods, and slightly better with them. Of course, if I'd loved the game, I'd love it more with more stuff. What really confuses me is people who say the game is meh in vanilla but awesome modded.

Whether or not one is better than the other depends entirely on the person judging. For some Skyrim is the greatest thing since sliced bread, for others Dragon Age is. Skyrim does exploration and freedom much better than Dragon Age, but DA does characters and story much better than Skyrim. Personally my rankings between The Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age games go like this (all versions assumed to be Game of the Year/Complete Editions with all DLC and bonuses):
1) Dragon Age: Origins
2) Morrowind (Only Elder Scrolls game with a good plot, by far most unique setting of all listed games)
3) Skyrim
4) Dragon Age 2
5) Oblivion (Pretty interchangeable with DA 2, both being the worst by far of each series)
My assumption on Inquisition is that it will end up in the 1-3 range, but we'll see. I'll go out on a limb and say it will definitely wind up taking over #4 from DA 2 at the very least.

I just didn't know what kind of mods mindw0rk was talking about. It sounds like his mods make the problem dlux mentioned even worse.

Limiting Fast Travel was a good move for myself; also deemed to help prevent a glitch that broke events in locations. And for impressive mods, Climates of Tamriel, Realistic Water Two, aMidianBorn textures, Enhanced Lighting and FX, Ultimate Combat, and the MCM included with SkyUI were the most impressive mods for me; had the greatest initial impact.
And I played 70+ hrs in 3rd person, 700+ hrs with only a single mod (ie; No More Blocky Faces), then the remaining time with ca. 70 - 100 mods. My initial playthrough was my least favorite, as I tried to include every Faction quest. But in the replays, I paced myself, set goals, developed personalities, and allowed myself to tell the story of what each Dragonborn accomplished. Highly recommend this approach.

Honestly, I hate how DA is compared to Skyrim (TES). They are so very different.
Also, Skyrim was completely overrated. I put several hours into that game and I still can't even tell you what it was about. Even the characters weren't memorable in the slightest.
You don't play Skyrim for the story (it's just a pretense). You play it for the great Role Playing experience. You do need to add some mods to be able to expand the Role Play capabilities of the game. That's why it's much better modded, because it increases the types of activities you can do, such as adding survival mods to add hunger, thirst, body heat, medical health, etc. Well I guess the game sort of becomes something like the Sims at that point.
But there is a mod that is a huge fan made quest series that's supposed to be better than the main quest though I haven't tried it.
I've definitely logged way more hours into Skyrim than DA:O and DA:2 combined. In either DA game I'll start trying to do a new play through and then get bored when I get bogged down with combat or simply don't want to have to trudge through the same corridors again.

Because it's a lot better with mods like e.g. Convenient Horses, Sky UI, UFO, Deadly Dragons, Vilja, ENB, Flora Overhaul, FNIS etc. and the story mods like e.g. Wyrmstooth (awesome music), Helgen Reborn or Falskaar.
