I'd have to say mages. Templars are also useful as they are trained specifically in combating hostile magic, but mages are more adept at this, have an emergency hotline to the fade should extraordinary circumstances require it, and come with the added bonus of having healers among their ranks. I ain't got time for hensbane and leeches.

Agree with OP here.

Chevaliers, their loyalty is nearly absolute and their skill in various styles of fighting is impressive. They aren't specialists like Templars meaning they can guard against many different threats.
