I just completed the assignment on the Citadel in ME2 about the Volus' missing chit and now I'm wondering just what is a chit? Is it 1 credit?
Is a chit just 1 credit?

I think it's just a card that transfers credits.

A credit chit is probably closer to a USB key or a preloaded debit card. It's called a 'chit' because it would have to have metal components, and it doesn't have to be the same size as the credit cards we're used to.

Yes.
Also during Kasumi's loyalty mission, Shepard will be happy she found a credit chit and will add to her total credits by one.

Yeah, I got the impression that it was a "debit card" of some kind with a variable amount of credits, depending on the owner.
Because I'd hate to carry around 6000 individual credit chits for that Thermal Scope I like.

A Chit is a debit card.

I concur with the above sentiments; it's likely just a debit card variation for credits.
If it was really just one singular credit then the amount of hassle the volus went through would be quite ridiculous.

Good point, get the feeling that it changed depending on the plot requirements.Yes.

Nah, that might've been a joke... See, Shepard found a Credit Chit that contained 1 credit.
Now, of course the Volus would be carrying the Credit Chit with hundreds or thousands of Credits.
It could be a Wallet, but for Credits... So, Credit Chit.

Or, alternatively a chit is merely the device that holds the credits and Shepard finds one that happens to only have one credit on it. If I found a debit card that only had a dollar on it it wouldn't mean that debit cards equate to a single dollar. There is no need to assume writers are just changing things on a whim when there is an solution that explains both instances.
I'm with MegaIllusiveMan on this one, the +1 credit was a joke. The other instances in the lore that revolve credit chits (I only know of one, actually) doesn't really support the idea that a credit chit only represents a single credit. Everything points to it just being a wallet/debit card equivalent for Credits. The term 'chit' even kinda suggests as such if you base it off one of the definitions for the word, according to google:
"a short official note, memorandum, or voucher, typically recording a sum owed."
The definition doesn't directly apply to this context but its reasonably close to what a credit chit is, imo.

Also, in the Citadel DLC, EDI mentions that Jeff loaned her his credit chit.

I think that its more like a secure credit stick, something where funds can be transferred from an account and then used without fear that your account will be traced. Basically like the bitcoin stuff but in a physical form.
