As the title states:

Will I know if I'm about to reach the point of no return in ME1's storyline? If not, when would be the best time to make a 'point of no return' save?

It's pretty obvious when the point of no return is, you shouldn't have any problems catching it.

There are a few that sneak up on you. Virmire is 1 - save just before you get to the Salarian camp. Before you dock at the Citadel after you've done Therum, Feros, Novaria and Virmire. I'm tired and that's all I can think of for now. Those are the big ones anyway.

I mean the big one, the "Once you get past this point you can't go back to your ship and thus go back into the galaxy map" one.

I would do everything before you complete the last story world. You are given one more chance after, however, but a few quests aren't available after you complete all 4 worlds. You'll know. You'll be stuck on the citadel, and once you leave, its either go to the end or visit the other worlds. Not much choice there.

You won't be able to go back to the citadel, which a few of the planet side quests may require for turnin.

The last world is technically the point of no return. While you can still get to the galaxy map afterwards, a number of places, including the citadel, are closed off.

Ilos is the actual, can't-go-anywhere-else point of no return. Once you land on Ilos, that's it.

It snuck up on me in my first playthrough. I was actually pretty upset that I had all these side quests that could never be finished.

As other posters have said, the effective point of no return is after you finish the fourth storyline mission (Therum, Noveria, Feros, Virmire, not necessarily in that order).
