I am totally lost in the toolset... i just want to make two poseable  characters and a backdrop... any help is appreciated

You could follow the tutorials up to and including Area, then skip to Creature. There is rather more there than you're asking for, and it may not answer all your questions, but understanding the basics can be helpful.
