So basically the title says it all. Is the keep to any use if you haven't played previous games? Not knowing enough about the story to randomly make choices either.

Also, if you dont touch the keep, what do you start off with then?
What are pros and cons for the keep if there are any cons.

Lastly, what of the story and parts of the series is essensial to read up on? Chantry? Mage/templar?

Well, if you don't know much about the world and haven't played the previous games, just play DAI and you'll have the default world state. The default world state, from my understanding, makes it so most decisions made are done so that they don't impact DAI in a way that you'll need to have an understanding on what happened before to continue. You won't have a character from a previous game come to you and expect you to remember something, etc. That excludes decisions where a big choice must be made and there isn't a neutral or 'didn't do' option.

The Keep, if you haven't played the games, can be used to mix your decisions so you see what will change in DAI if you do multiple playthroughs. For example, you can see what the default world state decisions are, and purposely pick the opposite/different options to see the changes.

There are a lot of videos out that explain the world of dragon age in a very simple fashion and get you caught up on the story. The Keep also has an interactive video at the beginning that tells you the gist of the main events of the first two games, but fan videos may do a better job at getting you caught up.

In addition to what Katerinafm said, here's a website that basically states some of the key things you might want to know for Inquisition (please note, there are spoilers for DA:O and DA2:

http://kotaku.com/a-...-age-1658487212

As a summary: the author explains the location of the game, Thedas; the main nations that might be important (Fereldan, Orlais, and the Tevinter Imperium); Mages, the Fade, and Templars; Andranste; the other races besides humans (elves, dwarves, darkspawn and Qunari); the Blights; different factions (the Chantry, the Grey Wardens, etc.); the main events in DA:O and DA2; and finally, important characters that will be returning in DA:I (Morrigan, Leliana, Varric, etc.)

Hope this helps!

Just go to the Keep and click stuff at random, it'll be funny.
