I think it depends on what your doing.

 

Are you going solo ?

What difficulty?

What other members of the team do you have and what do you want your role to be?

 

If you want to just 100% key enemy's then go shadow. Keep in mind though that shadow is pretty much useless if you are solo.

 

Duelist end up dealing good DPS and are pretty hard to kill. If you want to be able to stand toe to toe with enemy's then go duelist.

 

Think of shadow as assassin and duelist as a fighter.

I always go Duelist myself and leave the Shadow specialization for Isabela. Duelist has been exceptionally useful against enemy mages that position themselves away from the fighting, since I can quickly zip across and land a critical hit before they use their AoE attacks and then disappear and reappear in some other safer position. The saarebas was always the most annoying about this, and Duelist easily counteracted it.
