I know, I know. This thing is a standard in the games industry now with the advent of pre-loading. But honestly, what's the reasoning behind allowing pre-loads but withholding the actual game?

  • No work's being done on it any further except for post-release patches and DLC.
  • Reviewers have already got full, playable copies.
  • We already have the game files downloaded.
  • It only comes out 4 days from the pre-load date.

I'm genuinely curious why the industry does things like this. I'm not criticizing BioWare or getting angry over it, but I really don't understand the reasoning of locking out a game when it's pre-loaded and so close to release.

The answer is that the brick and mortar stores aren't all prepared to release simultaneously today.

1. Financials still need to be calculated apropos to a precise date for documentation purposes.

2. Retailer relations with the publisher need to remain strong.

I think they let us pre-load so that we get better download speeds since not everyone is hitting the servers at once on release day.

In general:

  1. If downloads are spread out over a weekend, it makes it less likely that EA's servers will catch fire than if everyone hit download at midnight on the 18th.
  2. It gives players the chance to play immediately on launch.

I happen to agree that they should let in the people who downloaded it like a normal citizen of the 21st century, but I can't fault them for not wanting to make the brick stores angry. Overall, this system seems like a fair compromise to me.

Edit because of course I don't come up with a good analogy until ten minutes later:

This phase is like when Thanksgiving dinner is all cooked and on the table, but your grandfather still insists on slowly drawling his way through Grace before anyone can enjoy themselves. It's just something you have to bear through to get to that delicious deep-fried nug.

Wouldn't mijd be able to get in 1st thing Monday morning rather than waiting til Midnight. I'm off Monday and a whole day with Inquisition rather than a sleepless night sounds better to me

it too be as fair as possible to everyone... I ordered from amazon and may not get it tell the 20 th.  and I'm poor so it's standard on 360.

Distribution of physical copies, want to make sure enough people have them. I'd imagine.

I'd like to think as well that they're working on fixing bugs for a Day one patch...

So does day 1 patch hit at midnight EST on the 18th or is it only during business hours?

Because right now the moon is a waning gibbous, but it needs to be a waning crescent for a game to be released. Well, a fantasy rpg, that is. Obviously, different genres have different requirements.

Like others have said, its to keep the brick and mortar stores happy. The other option would be not allow preloads at all, and have to fight for bandwidth as a million people all tried to download the game at the same time at launch.

Yeah cuz Gamestop (the only US video game retailer who would even notice if Origin copies were allowed to play early, big box stores sure as hell wouldn't notice) would totally stop selling all EA games over that. /sarcasm

They'd get into a trade war if they were negotiating a contract. And they'd sue EA if they already had a contract in place because that contract would presumably set out the terms of their game selling. Maybe EA could sweat them out when digital released get big enough - but it's the need for console physical sales that gives box stores the negotiation pull to keep the digital release fixed to the physical release.

I wish it dropped this week. It releases in my country 2 days before I have to give a big presentation and start 2 big ass essays and a draft of a dissertation.  :(

The irony, of course, is that GameStop employees are one of the biggest breakers of street-date agreements.

The simple answer is that it isn't the release date yet.

Just because you are all suited up and ready to run, doesn't mean you can just start a marathon when you arrive.    You have to wait for someone to say "GO!".

Sure. But EA won't have the pull to leave these stores to die until the digital market grows enough to allow them to do it.
