gamepad

So I didn't keep my Mass Effect saves and I'm about to play through it again.  This time I decided to go with an adept but unlike my original soldier which was pretty much a straight forward shooter guy, I'm really getting annoyed at the way shooting and using powers work with keyboard/mouse.

So I plugged in my ps3 gamepad, installed some software to make it act like a generic gamepad and it works fine in other games. But for some reason I can't use it in Mass Effect? Is there away/mod to make gamepads work with Mass effect on the pc?
