They were talking about how smart and intelligent dogs are. I have no clue why did you bring compasion into this discussion, because compassion has ntohing to with intelligence.
For you reference this was what you replied to :
Were they talking about compassion or about intelligence ?
it doesnt make any difference, because my response was a counter to their claim that dogs are mindless beasts, which is clearly wrong. They know how to take care of eachother and show compassion, there is nothing mindless about it. There is nothing mindless about protecting your mate, or wanting to save somebody. They are not as intellectually evolved as humans are, but that doesnt make them mindless beasts. There are about a gazillion studies and experiments that show how humans become mindless beasts at the drop of a hat. A very famous experiment involved two people in opposite rooms, one was informed they had to electrocute the other if they answered a question with a wrong answer. A majority of those pople were willing to deal out lethal dosages of electricity just because somebody else told them to. Humans who were otherwise nicey nicey, have been known to do all kinds of disgraceful things from murder to torture given the right, or actually wrong circumstances.
Speaking of social experiments another was made to try to explain what happens in prison where torture occurs. They recruited some volunteers and had one group roleplay as prison guards, while the others were prisoners. It didnt take long for the "guards" to turn brutal-
