So I have a bit of a quandry. I only want to play as qunari and dwarves, but I don't want them all to sound the same. I'm only planning one female, so it's easy to pick the American voice for her.

But I want to do at least two males to start: a qunari and a dwarf. Is there anything in their backgrounds that would have it make more sense for one of them to have the British accent? I'm thinking that since the qunari inquisitor is from Ferelden, maybe they would have that accent?

Yup since you are vashoth you can easily have been raised in fereldan and dwarf is a surfacer same thing can apply here as well hence why they are giving us a choice in which voice set we can use.

It would just be a little jarring or immersion breaking to have this British sounding qunari and then meet his family and they all have American accents.

Sumalee Montano's sounds perfect from everything I've watched so far. She sounds suitably tough, but she doesn't have the problem I've always had with Jennifer Hale's female Shepard, for instance, where I felt she was trying a bit too hard to sound that way. Sumalee's just sounds like it comes naturally.

So far on the male side the american voice just does not fit the male human I worked up so I went with the British voice I guess that is the accent of the other one. I did not want to spend much time in customization with only 6 hours so did not try out the women voices. The voice acting however is done really well even compared to the games listed in my opinion if not better.

I may be the minority but the americanized voice is never going to fit in, in a game like DAI to me, even with me being from the US.

the American accent fits for qunari and dwarf.  Which I think is purposeful.  The dwarves and qunari have American accents and tend to have deep voices.

That actually makes sense you know since your parents they were raised with Qunari and their lands you weren't. For example me just like how I am of African origin I was raised and lived in Britain and I am also a british citizen of course my parents have African accents but my accent is british since I was raised in London.

Plus going to school etc and hanging around talking english hence I developed a british accent instead of a African one. Plus you will never see your parents in inqusition lol. I even had some other African kids back in the day wondering why my accent was different, I was one of the rare ones so to speak in my classes.

I think I was the only African person with a british accent in my classes back in the day man how time flies. So yeah where you live and how you were raised can affect your accent.

Well of course commonly Qunari and Dwarves have american accents but bioware gave a choice since they left our background rather open quite open actually. Hell when we first saw Qunari in action during E3 she was using the british female voice.

Just pick whatever voice you feel works for your character in my opinion.

Yeah, there are a lot of ways that it could make sense. I was just wondering if there is anything that would make it NOT make sense. I guess that would have been a better question, huh? Like if we meet the rest of the dwarves in the Carta and everyone has an American accent but me. You know?

Not really since American is common for a dwarf at most I could see them making small jokes about your accent being differet here or there I mean at most all that's said about your dwarf is that your a surfacer and you are cadash and what we know of the cadash branch that broke off to the surface is that it possibly happened hundreds of years ago.

So there is nothing to worry about it not making sense I do note you never meet the people from your origins stories they are simple advisor missions since bioware wants to avoid the Cousland problem .

Awesome. That is super helpful information. Thanks.

I'm going to go with a British accent for my qunari then because I'll just head canon that he picked up that accent since he was raised there. And I don't have to worry about any pesky siblings showing up with American accents to ruin it all for me!

Am I the only one who things Sumalee has zero (absolute and completely nill) ability to inflect emotion? True, the "dead, monotone, non-living" emotion is somewhat done well, but in scenes which are anything but everyday average there is a completely inappropriate lack of emotion.

Honestly, the scene I'm about to describe is probably the worst example of voice acting I have ever heard in my entire life. It may be less than a second of dialogue but it fills an eternity of disappointment.

Scene: The fade-reflection begins. CoryShadow, a 9-foot, clawed hands monster is magically restraining the leader of the world's religion; the Divine herself. Femquisitor walks in.

Flattest, most unbelievably monotone reaction: "What's going on here?"

Seriously, look at it yourself.

While I'm not a big fan of the American male actor either, listen to his version:

I'm good with Sumalee's voice (and plan to use her for my elf, who was originally born in an alienage). The line might be flat, but it allows me to imagine a more varied character in my head. I have found that if the VA's for the PCs emote too much (especially during dialogue that I have no control over), I feel I have to ascribe to that personality (whatever that may be).

However, it is fantastic that we have options. Bully on that! ;)

They both come off too confused and not very commanding sadly.

Haven't played the game, mainly watched videos, but I'm liking how all of them sound. Sumalee Montano is probably my favorite of them all, funny thing after listening to Jon Curry's performance he sounds kinda like Michael Dorn.

I know right? Especially if you put it on a Male Qunari character.

Yeah, not a fan at all of Sumalee's voice. I guess it works ok for a female qunari with no emotion.

This is a recycled line that is used more appropriately in another part of the game.

I loved the female brit voice on my Elven Mage for my first play through. I am also using the same voice for my human female. It seems to fit her very well. That's the one thing I miss when I play Origins. My character actually talking. I love PC voice acting. I have yet to try a play through with the female American voice but I shall do at some point.

Voice 2 male is terrible for any character. His acting is bad IMHO.

I find them all to be fantastic in the right context of a given roleplay.  Personally, I find the American voices give me (and my ear) a greater range of flexibility (maybe 'cause I'm American.)  The British voices seem more specialized, working better with Dalish and Noble backgrounds.  How they compare to DA2 and ME-series is highly debatable.  F/M-Hawkes/Shepards are iconic.  For me, nothing will ever compare to Jennifer Hale's renegade-Shep across the entire trilogy, but Mear's maturation as a VA was fully realized in ME3.  Really I have very little complaint when it comes to Bioware VA and feel it's one of the reasons I find these games so much more immersive than other games I play.

Honestly for me it goes depending on what face I made for my Inquisitor. If I made young and cute version of Inquisitor then I pick British,if face is more serious and older then American because British would look weird then.

Just personal opinion but.....

Im struggling with the british male voice, although better than the american, the acting & delivery is all too often just completely out of context for the situation.

It looks like the actors didn't get to see the scenes before voicing them?

They are all very well done. I think that in terms of voice acting quality, Bioware has no need to worry or to reinvent the wheel, they have pretty much perfected the art of making video games with well done voice acting work.

I prefer the Female English voice. The Americian female voice is a little deep for my taste.

Since I haven't done a play-through with a male IQ, so cannot comment on the voices for that.

Both British voice actors are topnotch; kudos to both Harry Hadden-Paton & Alix Wilton Regan for great performances. On the American side, the work is more hit or miss. Sumalee Montano has moments where her work resonates better than the bulk of her efforts for Inquisition, but too much of her performance seems flat and/or dull, a charge that I find Jon Curry equally guilty of (and that is a surprise from the former Zevran player)?

If I had to rate the Inquisitors vocal actors, I would easily give the top spot to Regan, followed closely by Hadden-Paten, Montano next and finally Curry. For future franchise games, I think that varying the accent range beyond British and American is overly due!

[I would have really enjoyed hearing Allegra Clark (Josephine), Stéphane Cornicard (Stroud) voice the Inquisitor in their respective accents, and it is something along those lines that I'm proposing for the next game lead?]
