I wonder what the folks in the Blackwall character thread think of this? It's quite the twist and I guess it's true.

If this is true, Bioware gets some serious props from me for the Strum Brightblade reference - Bushy facial hair and all.

Wow. The Inquisitor is going to get taken by a flimflammer. This is why you don't just take everyone at face value kids!

If this is true, I'm not sure how my Inquisitor will take it when he finds out. I mean, Zevran was one thing, at least he was honest out front. This though... this will cause some rifts.

That's a curveball, I honestly didn't see this coming. I'm a little disappointed since I wanted a  Grey Warden companion but this does make things interesting because we can know understand that concept art, Blackwall was so captivated by the Grey Wardens that he impersonated one, then finds out what they are doing in DAI and is disappointed and feels betrayed so he doesn't want to be one anymore.. Interesting

Quite annoying, hopefully we can force him to undergo the rite of joining. I want a Grey Warden companion, as they are the main thing that interests me in Dragon Age (aside from the chantry/templars).

I think this makes him even more compelling. As to being a "con man" - if someone becomes a con man to inspire heroism in the world, train commoners to defend themselves against bandits, and generally make the world a better place, rather than for personal gain, I can appreciate that. It's really only an extension of what his intro shows his values to be (twisting conscription and ancient treaties to the needs of the cause). I wonder why he wouldn't actually become a Warden, though, if he was so inspired. Maybe they're pickier when it's not a Blight.

This is really exciting. Although I really enjoyed the video of his recruitment because of his personality, before that I never had much interest in him. His character at the surface level is a bit, well, boring. Noble, altruistic Grey Warden is a bit of a yawn to me. This, however, makes him very interesting. Can't wait to see how it unfolds.

Less a con man, more a con artist.

Well bright side is that Cory can't mind control him then.

Now I don't need to worry about bring him along for Grey Warden involved quests and have him face a horrible fate by Cory

And this was my first thought when I read this thread.

How my Quizzy feels about will really depend on what actual happens in game.  What Blackwall does and why.

My instinct is .... I don't like it but there could be compelling reasons that make my character more understanding.

My Warden recruited at least three people who were actively trying to murder him by the time Awakening was over, so he's going to need a pretty good explanation for why he didn't just seek out the Wardens and take the Joining for real.

What's funny is that I'm probably not going to romance anyone in this game but him being a Grey Warden was the number one reason why he wasn't even on my radar. Now. I may change. Depends on how he is in game.

this is awesome! i love how there's a pleasant little twist to each character. all of DAO's/DA2's characters were entirely on the surface(except wynne lelianna and alistair)

Please let this be true. If it is, it makes Solas' "rumoured" true identity far more plausible.

Also, as others have pointed out

I watched the conversation videos with him, and I definitely think he was a criminal/con-man before he became a Grey Warden.
