Blackwall was a husband to a Grey Warden wife.
She was pregnant. Both she and the child died.
Left alone, Blackwall took up her cause afterwards.

Yes, fellow BSNers. They've gone Thane on us. Possibly without the terminal disease bit, though. Or the rebellious teeneger.

Bear in mind that I have heard this from only one source. But it sounds legit, given that we have solid evidence that Blackwall is not Blackwall.

Yeah I'm hoping it's right because it makes Blackwall so much more interesting to me.

 

But hopefully next game will have another blight then we can get a competent older warden.

I'm thinking he might have actually joined the Wardens afterwards and been dissatisfied with the actual organization or something compared to the stories, thus him appearing to be quitting in the concept art.

 

That's my baseless speculation for now, anyway...

Eh didn't Thane start killing bad people because of his wife instead of just taking any offer?

 

It's a slight difference really. Why can't the female companions be the ones with husbands and dead kids for a change =/

 

Though yeah it's obviously not the same story.

 

Eh silver lining is already that he's probably a pathological liar. That's quite a nice dent in that knight in shining armor facade.

This whole thing gives a chance he actually did join the Wardens, so I'm rooting for this to be true, if anything...

He's not a freaking Warden. He's everything from an imposter, to the essence of being a Warden himself, depending on your perspective. But he isn't literally one.

 

With the actual Grey Wardens compromised, Blackwall is there to remind us of what really matters, and why we may want to do what we can to redeem the organization.

 

He may join later in the story, of course. Character arcs and all that.

 

 

[DA]: What was it like for you to write his character in Inquisition?

[SC]: I had a great deal of fun writing Blackwall. At least part of it was asking why someone might find the Grey Wardens appealing. Why choose to be part of that? A heroic sacrifice is still a sacrifice. What sort of person could decide that dying for something is better than just living?

And I would love to say more, but I won't. Ask me again in October.

 

[DRAGON AGE]: What is Blackwall's life like before he meets the Inquisition?

[SHERYL CHEE]: The Blight is ten years past. The Grey Wardens' prominence is decreasing again. The Wardens are known for their vigil; they keep watch for the darkspawn, for the Blight. But Blackwall isn't interested in just watching.  He is absolutely invested in the idea of the Grey Wardens of legend: those who place themselves between the people of Thedas and the oncoming Blight, acting as their shield.

 

 

Pay attention to the actual content, and he's never actually CALLED a Grey Warden. He is Blackwall, who carries with him the idea of the Wardens, after the Grey Wardens stumble. He's a Warden, but not a Grey Warden. Symbols. He can be more than Grey.

 

 

I fully expect the Grey Wardens (with all its blood drinking and secrecy) to be in decline and a more open Warden order to stick around thanks to Blackwall. It'll be okay. He's still a veteran - just not the kind you think.

Also the was this very touching music for him regarding children's chair or something...

 

When I first heard that he faked about being a Warden, I was sure my Inquisitor would be angry... but now...Now I want to give him a big hug...Since he lost his wife and his unborn child... Which IMO is worse than Thane's situation...

 

At least he does not carry the Taint with him...

If the 'honouring his late family' thing is true, I'd...be alright with him not having actually joined the Wardens himself, I think. In that case...it sounds like a lie for an honest reason, for lack of a better term...

 

 

I think he might actually be one, though. There's gotta be something to that old concept art.

It is not Warden Constable Mrs. Blackwall but perhaps Blackwall's brother ? Obviously a brother is not very Thane-ish but a beloved brother who died might be reason to make a man rise up to the cause...Or even Twins like twin brothers...I would prefer the idea of Blackwall having a twin brother who was a Grey Warden but died...This way, he could still pick up the cause and be relatively innocuous
