That's actually not comparable when you consider it's a religious ceremony that involves contemplation on the gods and the ways of the People.
That is perfectly compatible with a slave-branding ritual.

Quite possibly, like the Sentinels, who all have vallaslin and are willing to ally with you if you've shown yourself to honor Mythal before entering the chamber.

I believe it is a magical compulsion. Vallaslin means "blood writing" and Merrill says that's what it is, the recipient's blood mixed with something in order to create the tattoo. And mages who use blood magic are able to control other people's thoughts and actions.
