If you can import a hero  (warden or champion) from a  game, but then freely mutate the world state from there, what exactly is the difference except for:

- starting/default state

- name

- picture

Or is that it?

Importing just gets you the name and picture, it doesn't start you with any story decisions.

Yup. That's all that importing (or "syncing") a hero from a game does. It gives you a tile in the Heroes section which has the name and a small portrait of your in-game hero.

It does not "import" any other details from the game. If you want DA:I to reflect the choices you made in the previous games, you must manually recreate those decisions in the Tapestry. The fact that the Hero appears in the Keep is really just a matter of record, perhaps to help you differentiate the different World States you may make.

Thanks.  I thought there might be more to it when the Tapestry's resolver wanted to switch away from my hero, but perhaps that was just a sex/race/class change.

That sounds more likely. The Mardy tiles, for example, can only apply to a dwarf hero so, if you have a choice in that (other than "didn't meet") and your hero is a human or an elf, then that would flag a conflict. Similarly if the tiles say you romanced, say, Alistair and your Warden is male then that would be another.

Actual conflicts like that aside, however, you should be able to choose your own heroes. (Assuming they have actually made it into the Keep in the first place, of course!)

Well, I have this weird problem (unrelated to the Keep) where BioWare refuses to upload any of my DAO heroes after a certain point (yes, I've gone through the debug steps and filed a report) in time, so choosing my own heroes is a bit limited.

The more I think about this though, the more I think it is a UI design bug.  Instead of trying to import heroes,  I think they would have been better off with an option to choose the name of the hero and perhaps a side app to do the portrait like in the Black Emporium.  This would be less error-prone than the import process and besides, then they don't have to import all this stuff that they then discard.

Another possibility is that instead of using whatever background import process the in-game server connection uses, have the keep have the option for you to point it at a save file on disk and let us say, "Use this."

Yes, that's another thing entirely.  There are a lot of people who have one, some or all of their DA:O heroes missing from the Keep.

One workaround you can try is to download the standalone DA:O Character Creator (should still be available at FilePlanet) and create a new character in that. If you want, you can even use it to recreate the look of one of your old characters and give him/her the same name. Hit the Upload button at the end and it should appear in your list of heroes in the Keep about 30 minutes later.

A couple of people have said that doesn't work for them either, so there's no guarantee it will work. For me though, it did work even though I haven't managed to get any of my actual in-game characters into the Keep, so it's probably worth a try. Plus, if it does, it's a very quick and easy workaround.

Thanks!  I'll go hunting for that tonight.
