Does it matter? even if it doesn't I would like to be able to tell what level some characters are so I know if i did dlc with them etc. if it really doesn't matter what level my hawke and warden are and what there gear was then fine. still it would just be nice to see it.
Why can't i see my heroes' level?

In Beta you used to be able to see it, but they removed it because it served no point other than causing people to freak out over it if it wasn't right. Just choose the version of the character with the best portrait, if you have multiple versions of a character, because the only difference between the versions of the same character is the portrait you see in the tapestry.

It doesn't matter. Only name and picture of your character are transferred.
