Breaking yourself free from the hold of a video game...

What games have you been unable to stop playing? How did you finally "get over" them and move on?
Unfortunately I can't seem to stop playing any other game Destiny. I know it has; atrocious dialogue, barely any story, grinding endlessly to get armor to level up, PVP which I don't much care for... Maybe Inquisition will end this obsession.

I played Battlefield Bad company 2 excessively (2000 hours combined pc and xbox) I then stopped playing that moved onto the battlefield 3 when that was released and spent about 1000 hours on pc and xbox combined and then stopped playing when battlefield 4 came out and did not buy it.
Since this i've now managed to play a wider variety of games such as skyrim, sims, X3, and AC blackflag.

I dropped Destiny when I realized that the raids me and my team were doing every week stopped being fun and were more or less just going through the motions.
I played Sunset Overdrive afterwards which was a pleasant change of pace, am now playing AC Unity and the Halo MCC which are all very good, and Inquisition is up on Tuesday.
Its as easy as just stopping.

World of Warcraft when I was in high school.
I dropped from an A to an F over my Christmas break because of my addictive habits. Funnily enough, I still ended up rolling with a Chemistry major in college.

So what's the cure for such addictions? Open mind and variety. Change the pace, play other games, do other things.

So many games over the years (Hell, I played far too much Diablo II despite it being a game I loved), but most recently it has been Destiny. I have since (mostly) stopped playing it and will likely be playing far too much DA:I in a week or so.
Sometimes, even if a game isn't very good, or you're not even enjoying it that much, it just has something which keeps dragging you back. Quite often I find the thing that makes me play a game a great deal is the Civilisation motto "just one more turn." There's just one more thing I want to do, whether it's getting a new piece of gear, leveling up something, finishing another side quest, and then I'll stop, honest.

My suggestion is to go back and find a game you absolutely love and fire it up again. That will suck you back into a different addiciton.

You will get burnt out eventually. Crusader Kings 2 is my go to game that I play obsessively for awhile and then take a break. It's even worse because most of the time I've played it have been spent starting from the same duchy; just doing things differently or trying different mods.
When I get tired of games I try to catch up on T.V. and movies...

WoW pretty much took over in the BC days. But mainly because my old guild was doing serious progression then. I did really get into Mass Effect when it came out too. Played that thing all the way through doing everything at least 3 times before finally moving onto other games.

What about it? Destiny has a raid, we did it multiple times a week. Thus plural.

As a former Diablo II addict, I know the feeling. What cured me? Weirdly enough, Neverwinter Nights, hence the reason I'm here, and why I compare all subsequent Bioware games to NWN in terms of their Diablo II addiction curing ability.
So what's the cure for such addictions? Open mind and variety. Change the pace, play other games, do other things.
"What's the cure from addiction? Pfft Other addictions!"

Another chemist, yay!
As for myself, I can't say I was ever addicted to any video game. When I first discovered Mass Effect, with ME2, I played for about 160 hours in a month's time--about one-fourth of my living hours. But it was hardly an addiction. I haven't put anywhere near that kind of time into it since, and the same for any game.

One of my Biggest gaming obsession was TES:Oblivion.I put well over couple thousand hours into the game. For bout a year or two straight thats all i ever played, with few other games here and there, when i wasnt doing something like work or that.Mass effect broke that habbit, and mass effect franchise became the next game i could not break.then something else came after.as you can see, i have an addictive personality.now Coffee is my biggest obsession.time to level up i guess

Mass Effect is my gaming obsession, But i don't see a problem with it. I'm very self-controlled, So it doesn't affect anything i do. Infact, It actually makes me very happy whenever i start a new trilogy run.
