IGN has some walkthroughs for DAI up already, and while reading through them....

In Hushed Whispers

Champions of the Just

Spoiler

Thoughts? I haven't heard any mention at all of having to possibly miss out on a companion.

EDIT: Happily I misread and we will be able to still acquire both companions. :D Sorry for the false alarm!

You can still recruit them.  It is just a little later in.  This is kind of a big spoiler so don't read if you don't want to know about what happens to Haven

So Bioware actually did make it so there can be no peace/compromise option but you must again choose either the Mages or the Templars.

Considering that DG thought that the Geth-Quarian peace was a cheat is not surprising.

They could have just made it hard to get.

But no, let's go the Dragon Age 2 route. Because everybody loved the Dragon Age 2 route.

Yeah, which one you get first depends on who you choose to support.  Mages or Templars.  But you can still recruit both  :P

Interesting since these quest appears to be alternative ways to handle this dungeon so you don't have to send Leliana into the place.

Not only that but you also gain allies.

Under normal circumstances, I'd be all for the Dragon Age 2 route. But Inquisition takes place during what amounts up to the apocalypse. You'd think the mages and templars could somehow be persuaded to put aside their differences for a few months.

To be honest, I can see why it's one or the other. Trying to fix the world, you don't really have time to wait for them to work out their differences.

Except they were about to at the Conclave that went boom. Or at least both sides were willing to talk with each other.

And then the sky broke. I think that's what'll take precedent over "who is right". A conclave like that could take weeks, it wasn't about to be resolved overnight

Exactly, then the sky broke. Something that threatens both of them. But no, they don't do anything about the thing that killed their fellows but instead attack each other.

Plus way to send a "Diplomacy is a fruitless endeavor. War is better." message.

In this regard, I do prefer the DA2 route. I prefer tougher choices, and i dont think "hard to get" maintains the difficulty of the choice all that well. And the idea that extremists can make compromise unobtainable struck a chord with me with how it relates to the real world.

sending her in isn't that big of a deal as what happens to her isn't permanent

There are idiots on both sides. Can you truly assure the safety of all with idiots that may kill each other if funny looks are exchanged? No? So tell one side to come with you (not saying you need to wipe out the other side) and have them help you. The other can sit out the fighting. You can go back to peace talks after the disaster has passed

Watching the prologue again...

I think Cassandra has the best explanation for this: "While some believe you were chosen, many others still think you are guilty". I wouldn't be surprised if the "The Inquisiton is holding the dastard responsible for the Breach!" camps on either side get enough support to decide things depending on which side you try recruiting first.

In fact, Leilana also mentions how about they don't have a leader, numbers, lack of Chantry support, etc, so even just getting either side to actually consider what you're offering is probably going be a challenge in of itself.
