Background

Fen'Harel (pronounced fenn-HARR-ell) is also known as the Dread Wolf, He Who Hunts Alone,[1] Lord of Tricksters[2], The Great Wolf[3], Roamer of the Beyond and Bringer of Nightmares. He was known as kin to both the Creators and the Forgotten Ones. His supposed betrayal of both clans of gods by sealing them away in their respective realms, never again to interact with the mortal world, is sometimes used to explain why the elven gods--particularly the benevolent Creators--did not intervene to prevent the fall of Arlathan.[4] Indeed, Fen'Harel has allegedly never been fond of the elven people[5] and is said to have spent centuries in a far corner of the earth after his great deception, hugging himself and giggling madly in glee.[6]
The Betrayal

The deceit of Fen'Harel itself--known as the Great Betrayal--is sometimes described as a truce suggested by the Dread Wolf,[7] and other times as a hunt by the Creators and Forgotten Ones in the Heavens and the Abyss, respectively, for a blade Fen'Harel promised would stop a war.[8] It may even have been a bid by Fen'Harel to rule the Fade--or even Elvhenan itself--without the interference of the other elven gods.[9]
Relationship with mortals

Dalish elves generally consider Fen'Harel an evil god.[10] In the past, however, the Dread Wolf was called upon by elves for aid and advice in various matters...but always with a price. In spite of this, offerings of thanks were often given for Fen'Harel's help as he did follow through on promises of aid, if in an unorthodox manner. Since the fall of Arlathan, however, this practice has understandably fallen out of favor as a rule. In the modern day, statues of Fen'Harel are set facing away from any Dalish camp, as a reminder that the Dalish must always be wary. Furthermore, Keepers wear rings of sylvanwood depicting Fen'Harel's betrayal of the elven gods as a reminder of their duty to protect their clan from him.[11]

Solas may be telling the truth.

Solas may be telling a lie.

Solas is also fond of expressing the "perception is reality" worldview, so perhaps he simply expressing his opinion as fact.

The whole Solas thing is meant to be a bit ambiguous.

One could argue he tricked the gods and locked them up to save Elves. All old gods including Elven ones could simply be very powerful, immortal mages/dreamers or something similar and not actual "gods".

...and suggested that due to his background, Solas is not a reliable source of information about anything, particularly Elf history.  Everything on that page has a citation, so feel free to check the veracity of the references yourself.

Either is plausible, considering who he actually is.  Both are possible, if he believes the lies that he tells.

 

It would be like asking Loki about the culture of Midgard and expecting to get an honest answer.  "Runo?  Not a script.  The Norse just liked pretty shapes.  You can trust me, for realz!"

 

I don't know the truth,  I don't claim to.  I simply recognise that Solas is not a reliable source of information.

Well, since I'm more pro-city elf, I don't mind listening to Solas. I agree with him about the Dalish being to stuck to an imaginary past that they barely remember. It would be more worthwhile to attempt building something new instead of scavenging relics from a bygone era.

I've gone Elf even though Bioware absolutely abhors them; tis hard to play an elf in the DA universe.

Eh. DA2 made everyone act like idiots, Merrill was amazing, TME was stupid drek. Don't let it worm into your head.

 

I also don't think that DAI is Chantry-apologetic either; the Chantry seems to consist almost entirely of paranoid obstructionist louts, the Seekers are an evil ancient conspiracy, and Andraste's divine intervention turns out to be Corypheus' screwup.

Dalish, once again, are not all elves. Neither are the radicals. I'm actually pretty glad DA:I has elven Templars in it.
