I was really disappointed to find that DA2 didn't offer me a neutral choice on the whole matter. I hope DAI has a wider scope. So far I don't feel like any of my choices matter.

Without going into spoiler-heavy details:

While I don't think we'll be required to actively flip the bird (metaphorically) to one faction, I think we'll have to make a decision about who we back up actively. For me, it'll likely be mages.

The reviews have mentioned having to choose between the groups fairly early on.

This makes sense.

I wonder if the choice has to be permanent or whether you can be "convinced" to change sides at some point along the way.

I thought dragon age 2 was going to have it, it strung me along for so long with neutral options until at the very end it just flat out forced me to pick a side, that made me feel like all my work of trying to work out a peace was for nothing.

Wouldn't this constitute a spoiler?

I, too, hope there's a more neutral stance you can choose in this matter.

Ah, the price of neutrality... How much is it worth ?

Yes. At least the person answering put it in a spoiler box.

As for DA 2, I don't see how neutrality would have worked in practical gameplay terms.

You are the Champion and tasked with restoring order regardless of your personal feelings.

What bothered me more in DA is being forced to do quests like Shepherding Wolves when you were actually given a false choice (i.e. refuse Patrice). That was one of the more interesting quests and I see where it too needed to be played out but the faux-choice system was most awkward in parts. May DA:I redeem the series on choice.
