Nightmare mode to test how fair it is and if it's just a mode for those who already know every single fight beforehand and the mechanics rather than a challenge against strategy. If it gets more tedious than challenging down to hard mode I go. Friendly fire will be off.

Party will be myself as a mage inquisitor, Varric, Cassandra, Blackwall.

Nah. I usually go Normal or Medium until I know what I'm doing.

I haven't heard if FF include melee this time or just magic.    If it includes melee attacks again like DA2 then I unfortunately won't be using it.   Will play Nightmare though.

I'll start with Nihtmare too, I'm not too sold on the FF right now, maybe start with it on and then see how it goes. Ma party composition will be:

Human female rogue Assassin Inq (Archery)

Cole respeced into archery

Cassandra, support tank

And Viv, if Cass can reliably keep the aggro off the mage and I am not going to need KEnch's uber-heal  maybe some1 more DPS oriented, probably Dorian.

PS: Does any1 know for sure if Focus is a party-wide resource, or if it is for every char individually to use.

I personally play on Casual all the time (even if it's on my second or third playthrough). I'm in it for story immersion. I also get very frustrated when I don't win (I've broken so many controllers.)

I'll start on Nightmare. After DA 2 I learn that the player I use most is the tank, which was Aveline in my old party setup, so this time Im going for a Qunari Champion. Also, there's always some quests that force you to use an specific companion... and in nightmare you can't play without your tank! another reason for me to be the main tank haha.
Also Cassandra as an off-tank, Vivienne as support/magic damage and Varric for full damage output.

I don't have enough hair on my chest to play Nightmare day one.

I'll start with Hard + Friendly Fire On; if the game doesn't feel cheap, I'll bump up to Nightmare at some point.

Not without tactics - I can see each fight taking about a month.

Hard with FF on for me.

DAI's gameplay doesn't seem interesting enough to merit playing on a high difficulty. I'll crank it up for bosses just so they feel challenging, but other wise I'll stick to normal, unless it's baby food.

I'll start on Hard with FF on. The difficulty will stay, but I might turn FF off it it becomes too annoying.

Now that I saw both hard and nightmare achievements, I'll start with hard first. I got the feel for it with the trial a little.. it's still fun.

Good point. Yes, I am basing it on the prologue.

I admit, maybe I should actually play the game before saying it seems easier than DA2, haha :D

Although, if there's no random immunities like in DA2, I think it'll be easier ;)

See, I've been hearing that DA:I will be much more difficult than the previous games.

Also keep in mind: very limited potions and zero healing spells. Higher difficulties will definitely give players a real challenge - something much desired.

I'll start with Nightmare but I'll probably end with hard. The thing is, I always auto-level my companions, which gives my a disadvantage in a fight. So Nightmare might prove to be too frustrating on the first playthrough.

Now that is brave. I could never auto-level (I did with Tallis in DA2, but not usually).

edit: Actually, on second thought, there's less to go wrong in DAI. You should be OK autoleveling.

Hard with FF on.

I tried the Nightmare challenge on DA2, and it just sucked the fun out of it. For me, Nightmare is what you do when you've already played through and you've got a good grasp of the combat mechanics and optimised your builds.

I think it depends on how much do you enjoy the combat in the game. For me, a challenging combat is an important part of the game, its what makes the game fun, and the first playthrough is usually the hardest one, its something that only happens one time per game :D .

I usually go hard + friendly fire for first run

I also find the second highest difficulty setting most appropriate for my first playthrough. I find that the hardest difficulty forces me to meta-game too much for my liking.

Second playthrough, though.

EDIT: I'm also concerned with the lack of customizable party member behaviors. Playing in tactical mode all the time would make the game take forever. It's already 100 hours long!

I will start with hard with friendly fire on. If I don't feel challenged enough I'll turn it up to nightmare with friendly fire on.

My fear is that nightmare will be hard with more hit points for the enemies and will simply force me to go back to camps too often to restock on potions and rest. If that gets to be to much and annoying, I'll likely just stick with hard.

Would be cool if some american folks who will be able to start playing today could post some impressions of nightmare difficulty here, for those unlucky EU folk like me, who are still considering it for their first playthrough.

No, at first I want to enjoy the game story and the world with a bit of challenge, so most probably Hard without FF.

Agreed. Seems like Hard will be a good fit to really soak up the game without steam rolling through it.

And it will be more interesting in facerollmode?
