There may be no answer to this until the game actually releases but I thought I'd ask in case. With the addition of mounts, how will that work with following party members? Will they just run along behind your mount?

Disappear subtly, off screen, just like the mount subtly appears, I think.

It's a shame they don't run along like they do in vanilla skyrim. Maybe it was something they ran out of time for and just made them vanish instead

Frankly, I thought it was silly that Skyrim companions would run along behind the horse; if characters could run that fast, what was the point of the horse in the first place?

As silly as disappearing and then re-appearing once you get off the horse? ![]()

Probably makes more sense given that you could ride a horse into battle but if your party is several leagues behind you trying to catch up, this game would have another level of difficulty.

Based on what I've seen, the phasing happens off-screen, allowing the player to head-canon any number of methods the companions used to keep pace. In Skyrim, all you have to do is look back to see how silly your Flash-like companion looks as they barrel along to stay with you.

Yes you're correct. I can't remember which playthrough I was watching, but someone showed that it happens off screen. It doesn't seem as hokey as it sounds since it does happen off screen.

I believe it was the PC controls Twitch stream.

Lydia doesnt quite keep up with the horse. So I got a mod to make her use a horse as well (and to make the horse follow me)

Itd be cool if the horse had a little cart for your followers to perch in
But really, now that I think of it. Who needs to ride a horse anyway. Nice and cozy cart would be perfect!
One leading the cart while others converse/party banter. You could have a storage for items or even be like a traveling merchant or something. ![]()

If you have companions "follow in real-time" it creates pathing issues and needless complications, all for the sake of a pretty insignificant mechanic.
This is a video game after all.

Good Lord. That happened? Ugh. Anyway, I'm assuming we can just believe that our companions have mounts too, if they just pop in and out.

Exactly. It's really not that serious. I find it interesting what breaks immersion for some people though because it's so subjective. Like the OP here is not bothered by the summoning of mounts from nothingness but party members disappearing is a deal breaker.

I thought this thread is about mounting your party members. I'm disappointed.

I think the only thing that turns me away from using mounts is the fact that we may miss party banter.

Nope, right in front of you if you are facing them when you mount or dismount.

The mounts appear from off-screen. You don't see them materialize.

I just don't get why they couldn't let companions ride mounts?
I mean we already know that ANY companion can actually ride one (if you are in control of a companion and call your mount, you can ride it as them rather then your inquisitor).
So they already have all of the companions/animations for them to ride one.
The only thing left to do would be to have pathfinding for them.
I'm not a programmer but it seems to me like it'd be one of the most basic simple things to do.
Simply have the companions mount up when the player does and then have them follow the players EXACT movement (IE so they won't get hung up or try to go around something). Have each companion follow at "X" distance from the previous one (so the first one follows the player at x distance, then companion 2 follows companion 1 at x distance and so on).
Then after this simply have a "phasing" feature where if a companion gets "x" distance away from the player the game simply teleports them where they should be (just incase they do get hung up or stop on something).
Simple and to the point, it's the basic thing that mmo's did over 15+ years ago for their pathfinding and companions/npc's.

My guess is performance issues and engine limitations. Having 4 horses on the screen would get pretty chaotic though imo and frustrating in instances other than a wide open field.

Not that your idea wouldn't work, but "I'm not a programmer but... " doesn't carry a lot of weight. I've tried to work with pathing in modding tools and it's a ******, and probably not even true pathing. I can't begin trying to imagine it being used for additional party members.

I managed to create a custom companion mount system for Skyrim. Wasn't that hard, and it works fine (if the horse gets stuck, the companion + horse get teleported when the player no longer can see them).
