Before someone accuses me of racism, I'm non-white and dark-skinned myself.

I'm hugely interested in lore, so I was curious as to where in Thedas the African-featured characters come from.

Rivainis appear to have a dusky-to-dark skin tone with Indo-European features (not only in-game but in the comics as well), Tevinters, Orlesians, and Fereldans appear to be white in a northern European way, while Antivans are more Italo/Iberian.

Chasind appear to be darker-skinned whites, but this could be an engine limitation.

Has anyone read up on it? I don't own World of Thedas yet and I'm afraid to go to the wiki for fear of spoilers!

Rivain, Antiva, and Tevinter are all home to darker skinned people than Ferelden or Orlais

According to the lore, the elves were the original inhabitants of Thedas while the dwarves lived underground. The humans were supposed to have migrated from the north, ironically the same place the qunari's horned people came from.

Vivienne is from Rivain I think (or her family is) and I think Isabela is black as well (and obviously also from Rivain)? Just a bit lighter than Vivienne, but I'm not entirely sure.

I doubt there's much spoilers in the wiki. If I'm correct Duncan from DAO's a Rivainis, and isn't Vivienne? Soo... My guess is DA's blacks are Rivainis, like Redguards are ES's. I think some Rivain are like Dwayne Johnson, parents are black but oddly very deluded.

The darkest characters are from Rivain. Antiva and Tevinter have characters who are somewhat dark skinned as well.

Tevinter is a big place, you can find different people living there. And Dorian's not exactly white. Plus, there's also Fenris.

So for now we know for sure about Antiva, Rivain and Tevinter, maybe there are also other places.

Yeah its possible that all Rivaini people are black but like in real life some people are darker/lighter than others.

I really hope we go to these places in future games, it actually seems a bit weird that we've only been to the (predominantly) white countries in the first three games.

What we know of climates seems to suggest that the equator is somewhere to the north of Tevinter, so the northern countries are your best bet (Fenris is from Seheron, and (racial) qunari are certainly darker-skinned, though that may not have anything to do with climate). Vivienne is of Rivaini descent, so apparently people with African features do live there.

That said, humans (supposedly) arrived from somewhere in the north (possibly Par Vollen?) about four thousand years before the Dragon Age, so who knows what they looked like then.

In the makings. If you look at an interview... idk.. 2011? 2012? Bioware was giving an idea for future DA games. One guy, I'm assuming... Mike? Showed a screen of Thedas with Fereldan highlighted in yellow.

"This is where we were in Origins. Then we went to Kirkwall (tiny pinhead yellow highlight), but it wasn't as well received. So we were thinking more of this... Highlights a 3rd of Thedas. This it our ultimate goal. But for out next game, we'll go here (Highlights DAI area)."

So, it's possible. Besides wasn't DA2's Mark of the Assassin DLC in Orlais? So, perhaps we'll take a trip to Rivainis lands.

Yeah there one simple answer there but nobody dares to say it.

Duncan is half Rivaini half Ferelden if I remember right. This would explain his lighter tone, and engine limitations I guess

Eh the word "black" really is not clear enough or ethnic term. Although like someone has said the north mostly

Isabella is black but the engine just didn't show it.

I think they just changed the ethnicity of rivain, isabela looked like a white chick with a tan in-game(which i assumed was because she was a sailor), but she has mediterranean facial features in her trailers, so i think they were originally based on mediterranean people but changed to african features in inquisition to fit vivienne in

Josephine's from Antiva, which is at the same latitude as even the southernmost part or Rivain, and she's much darker than Isabella. Isabella being a sailor and Josephine being nobility (well, born in a similarly-wealthy merchant family, at least), I think its save to say that even the modified version of Eclipse they used to produce DA II (can't remember its name) still fails at skin tones.

I'd say that:

Ferelden: North Europe

Free Marches: Central Europe

Orlais: France

Antiva: Italy

Tevinter: India

Par Vollen: ???

Nah Vivienne is from the Free Marches, but yeah most likely her family is from Rivain (Grandparents or something idk)... Actually alot of major characters in DAI ae from the Free Marches come to think of it: The Inquisitor (regardless of race), Vivienne, Varric, and Blackwall

In DAO I though that Isabela was Romani but in DA2 she looked black to me ^^ Her looks have changed quite lot.

They've always been there to some degree, but the previous engine didn't do darker skin tones well. Geographically, I think Isabela was supposed to look like she was either more African or Indic in origin although she really only looked like a very dark-skinned Hispanic and Isabela was either Antivan or Rivaini.

So, I'm guessing you'll get a much more accurate representation of the different looks of the people of Thedas in this engine, and I'm glad.
