Auto-leveling companions

Judging from all the people posting their planned companion skillsets, I seem to be in the minority here in regards to this. I always, in any rpg, no matter what difficulty I'm playing on, auto-level my companions.

I does hinder me a bit when playing on the highest difficulties, but I just can't bring myself to do it any other way. I like to think of them as their own independent people and choosing what abilities they learn or not, just feels "unnatural" to me and it breaks immersion. Even in Origins I had trouble picking their second spec and instead of going what would fit best, I went with what would fit the character better story/personality wise.

I just hope that companion leveling is done right (with a decent end game build in mind) and that Nightmare isn't the same endless, everywhere-spawning mess that was DA2.

Hopefully there'll be some feedback in regards to this from the like-minded lucky bastards that will start playing this game 4 days before me.

I think it depends on how much control someone wants over the game. Personally I do want control over every aspect of my party since I want to make sure everyone is tailored to my character and I'm not caught off guard if I'm forced to use a companion I didn't use that much or don't know much about their abilities. If I'm a mage who uses frost magic I would prefer building a team that take advantage of frozen cross combo moves. I wouldn't help me if they learned a bunch of other abilities with no benefits.

So your companions don't take much away from your leadership? It seems to me that this would be a valid reason to assist them in their training, help them choose what to specialize in, etc.

Letting them choose their own abilities??? I'm too much of a control freak to allow that in an RPG.

I don't mind if a game makes suggestions for assigning an ability / skill to a character, as long as I have the option to override that suggestion should I disagree with it.

Nah, I like to spec companions to fit to my playstyle.

I kind of mix auto-leveling and customizing, myself - similar to your reasons, OP. I tend to only manually control a party member's abilities if a particular branch the autolevel uses really messes with my play style. This happens more often in Mass Effect than Dragon Age, though.

I like doing this too, focusing on just my character makes it feel more immersive and that I'm part of a team who does their own things, I like to plan my own builds but let my companions auto level themselves.
