How can Fionia be a Mary Sue? She's lead a brutal hard life that has ended up anything but peachy. And shes hardly the most powerful mage.

If anyones a Mary Sue its the Warden. How exactly did we stop a blight in about a year when most take decades to beat if not more?

Wait, if that's not Alistair. It's doubtful that's even Finoa.

By having the victory helped with a vulnerable archdemon (since the blight was so early and the darkspawn army nowhere near the strength it was during other blights), some luck and planning by powers far more powerful than the warden was (Flemeth, The Architect was also more powerful than the warden at the beginning of his/her journey).

That's how.

Not to mention BW's protags are always sues. That's not even a question. And even despite this suedom we don't get a get out of blight free card.

It's been 32 years and Fiona doesn't look a day over 15. Totes not a sue. Especially when combined with everything else. She's defeated the aging process, even.

But what does she say to him? Nothing as regards to she is his mother!

Fiona expressed her desire that Alistair be told his mother was human and died at childbirth. In DAO, Alistair told this story to the Warden... at least in my plythrough.

Alistair appears angry in the second spoiler picture.... maybe she decided to tell him the truth.

Yes, Finoa was mysteriously cured of the blight but that only hardly makes her a mary sue. Shes far from the most powerful mage or even the best leader. Things haven't gone peachy for the rebel mages just because Finoa is leading them. Some would argue Finoa just made everything worst.

Cassandra is in her mid-late 30s and doesn't look so. Hawke looked the same when they were nineteen and when they were 30. Bioware has never been particularly great at making people look their age. Even Wynne didn't look nearly as old as she implied she was.

Yeah, Cassandra is in her mid-late 30's, while Fiona should, at the very least, be in her mid-late 40's (but probably should be older).

... I think we need to mash her and put her in a still, it would be a excellent resource for the Inqusition to gain plot armor potions.

Too much suffering so that you pity her is a common trait among Mary Sues. You can look at a Mary Sue test to find out.

I haven’t read the books, but reading her wiki description, but her character seems written as creator's pet, who tries to come off as somehow really unique and likeable to all, but instead it comes off as irritatingly boring. (Like Tallis)

An elf with a troubled past who ironically becomes the lover of Maric? Okay. But on top of that being Alistair’s mother, getting the only get-out-of-free jail card from the calling, and then being promoted to grand enchanter, and now has taken in part of shaping Thedas’ current state?

Meh.

(Also you can make a non-Mary Sue warden. You’ve just got to have the balls to make mistakes and bad decisions on purpose, force characters out of your party, and romance no one if need be.)

My dislike for this is really more about adding yet another absurdity to Fiona's list of absurdities than it is about Alistair, who is basically a failure the Warden has to (potentially) succeed in place of.

Fiona, on the other hand, is just a bit too magical special awesome snowflake for my tastes. An elf mage slave with included traumatic experience (because being an elf, slave, and mage wasn't sad enough, apparently), who murders her master and isn't immediately executed in spite of living in a world where elves, mages, and slaves are often killed for no reason at all. She then goes on to be a Grey Warden who hangs out with the Mentor before he was the Mentor, the King of the Land and the Hero of the Land when they were still awesome adventurers. And not only does she hang out with them, but they think she is the most awesome Grey Warden Mage that ever Grey Warden Maged in the history of Grey Warden Maging. And on their adventure, they basically do all the Architect parts of Awakening before it is cool, because the Warden Commander can suck it. Oh! Oh! And in spite of hating each other and having zero in common (plus traumatic past!) she bangs the King. Because reasons on her part and because Maric can't go too long without sexing someone not named Rowan or he loses his superpowers. And then she goes and hangs out with the First Warden. Oh, and has a kid. With the King.

But wait! There's more!

Now that we've established that she is the most awesome Warden ever, she's cured of the Taint because that crap was just holding her back. Now she joins the Circle and everyone loves her, and because she is the most admirable and awesome mage ever, they promote her to the highest position possible, you know, in spite of other Mages who have lived their entire lives in the Circle probably having more in common with their fellow Circle Mages. Because everyone loves her. And, of course, she is just the bestest Grand Enchanter.

But wait! There's more!

In spite of the Circle being an evil slave prison of evilness where evil Templars evilly control every facet of mage lives(with evil), including which mages get to wear the fancy mage leadership hats, she manages to get the whole Mage Leadership together and hold a democratic vote to tell the evil Templars to go away. AND IT FAILS! THE TRAGEDY! So, because the evil Templars are evil and control every facet of mage life, including which mages get to wear the fancy mage leadership hats, she is immediately removed from office and killed, because this mage freedom business is Not Acceptable.

Oh, wait, no. This is Fiona, so that last bit doesn't happen. The evil Templars just let her keep doing her thing, because Fiona. And to the surprise of no one, and because way back when she got de-Tainted she decided she was going to be Mage Moses, she does it again! And wins! And despite being in a tower full of evil Templars created and trained for the sole purpose of putting mages down, they all escape and yay.

The End.

Oh, wait, no. That kid she had with the King goes on and hangs out with another Warden who does some cool stuff like Fiona (but she totally did some of it first, and cooler). And her son, and Marric's, rest his not yet dead soul, goes on to (maybe) become King.

NOW The End (until Inquisition. Maybe.)

Honestly, you could distribute Fiona's accomplishments to three characters and not a one of them would have reason to feel lacking in the presence of the Warden who united a nation and saved the world.

But yeah

Well Alistair is about 30-32 at the time of Inquisition, so Fiona would probably be 50 or so, considering she was still fairly young during The Calling.

I don't think she looks particularly young, but not as old as she should, either. She should be in at least her 50's, from that picture I would have guessed late 30's- early 40's. This has nothing to do with her so called 'sue-dom' though, BW has made many characters look much younger than they really are lol. They have also made many characters with special abilities and great powers who escape nearly impossible situations and perform nearly impossible deeds... in every game. If one's going to be accused of mary-suedom, lots of others should as well.

None of that bears any resemblance to the character I remember from the book. That "analysis" is ridiculous at best, and outright malicious at worst.

I know. That’s why I said that she seems to have been written as a creator’s pet, but didn’t say she was a Mary Sue in specific since I don't care to read the books to really have a better opinion.

Traumatic pasts and being the only one to bend the laws of the fictional universe, and also being special to important characters are common warning flags for a Mary Sue though, and that's all I can say.

Fiona looks young because of sue aging, just like how she was able to get rid of her taint.

Well considering this is a Fictional world it should not be a surprise there is someone out in the world that does things most people could not finish within a life time in a short time.

She gained and accomplished a lot in a short time but I rather save judgement by meeting Fiona in person rather than depending on the book which uses a observer persective where readers only observe her actions to determine her character rather than getting to talk to her and learn more about her character.

Eh, I've seen people in their fifties and sixties who looked like they were in their late 30s or early 40s. Saying if you don't look your age, you're a Sue is kinda... silly.

And besides, she's an elf. It's a pretty common thing for Elves to look young in media no matter their actual age.

Case in point, Marethari. Much as I hate that dottering old relic she does not look like a woman who would be well over 100 (which she is). As a counterpoint, there's Marethari's replacement first in Act 3 who looks old (and blind it seems).

You know. I might side with the mages if they turn on Fiona for getting them into a fight where they're outnumbered 100 to 1 and being slaughtered en masse.
