I apologize if there is a thread for this, but do we know if its possible to craft heavy armor for Mages?  I recently played the trial through EA Access on the Xbox One, but anytime I tried making heavy armor for my mage, it kept saying that it was restricted to warriors.  I thought we were supposed to be able to craft whatever sort of armor we wanted for our characters, regardless of class.

Bioware said it was possible. Perhaps you were not using the right materials, or schematics? We will not know for sure until we have a chance to play the full game.

Yeaa.... I thought the same thing too.  Seems like we will have to find heavy armor that is "mage appropriate."  The flames of the inquisition armor looks heavy armor and the mage can wear that.  I assume that we will be able to wear heavy armor, but we will have to find the proper schematics located in the world somewhere.  But I'm with you, I was really looking forward to playing a mage in full heavy armor.... I was that guy in Skyrim in all daedric armor (except for the helmet) casting spells.

I feel like Skyrim wanted you to use armor on a mage. There was no penalty for doing so.

From what I remember (I haven't played EA Access, but I don't think it goes to that point anyway), you can make metal armors out special ultralight-but-just-as-strong metals that can be worn by mages, but normal heavy stuff won't work.

True, but unless your enchanting was high enough to enchant your pieces, robes with their magica regeneration was a huge help.  That's what I wish DA:I would be like; if you want to wear heavy armor then fine, wear it but you won't get the buffs that wearing a robe of magica regeneration would give you, etc.  Aesthetics are very important to me in these games, as it is to most of us.  It's why they give us such an amazingly detailed character creation.  I have been underwhelmed with almost every "robe" I have seen in the game thus far... I can only hope there are actual robes and hoods like the ones the Vinatori mages wear especially if mages are limited in which type of heavy armor they can wear.

I agree, but after i realized you could have 0% cost for magic through enchanting, practical/always on armor, and look aesthetically pleasing, I could never wear robes in Skyrim again.

In DAI, I hope I don't have to get to the end of the game to have heavy mages. And it just occurred to me that rogues would look cool in mage/light armor.

Isn't there a perk that allows you bypass class restriction when crafting armor?

Is there?  I honestly have no idea.

Would you happen to know which metals are considered ultralight?

I haven't heard of that, but maybe someone else has.  And just because we can craft it doesn't mean we can wear it.

I have heard of that somewhere as well. I have also heard others say there is a specific crafting material that removes class restrictions on schematics, or that a certain specialization (which may tie into the perk) allows you to do so.

I thought a dev said that material part during a stream. My concern is that x material is hard to find or endgame stuff.

Same, which is why PC was so appealing to me before I discovered that this engine is apparently notoriously difficult to mod. Hopefully that is simply because it is usually used for multiplayer games, rather than singleplayer. We will find out soon enough.

All I can tell you is that if I heard it, it was probably in a livestream. Maybe the Skyhold one?

If I recall correctly it requires a special masterwork item to make the armor class independent.

I just saw a thread on this topic, including some pics, a day or two ago, but I'll be damned if I can find it again.

From what I recall;

If your concern is appearance. I think you'll be happy. Seems there were some nice, what I'd label 'medium', armors available fairly early on. With the ability to do heavies later.

If your looking for the same heavy armor dmg mitigation as warriors... I'm not so sure, but don't count on it.

The armor could give me the same armor rating as robes, I don't care.  It's all about what I look like.

If I recall correctly, you need a special Masterwork material (which is probably fairly rare) in order to make an armor class-independant (or maybe just make it Mage-exclusive instead of Warrior?). Don't quote me on this however. So it's probably not going to be very easy to get.

On the other hand, from what we saw so far, Mage gear looks pretty cool this time around. So at least it's not like in Origins where my Mages always went AW, not to use the skills, but to be able to equip something that doesn't look like absolute crap.

Mike Laidlaw confirmed you can wear (actual)heavy armor as a Mage, but he didn't specify exactly what it involves.

We know there are is a perk that unlocks all Mage armor schematics, and it might involve some materials as well. No idea about anything more.

If I remember correctly, a mage can wear heavy armor if they've taken the Knight Enchanter spec.
