I'm alright with the use of such things, as I disagree that pirates have the 'test it first' rights. However, if it makes the game run badly, then it's an inexcusable form of protection, but no-one knows if it does do this. For the Fallen to moan is a bit pointless - I bought that game and it's utterly dire....I hate it, and it's not to do with the protection, just think it's a terrible game. The thing about this is that it has been given so much work and love and attention, and I don't think that anyone has the right to diminish it's sales by piracy. Really, saying that people want to try this first is infantile. People have had early access, there's been open reviews and the world has been pumped full of what to expect. If you haven't the faith to try it by normal means, then don't play it at all. If it had been snuggled in secrecy, maybe that would hold a little water in their eyes. It hasn't.

Steam is no obstacle to piracy at all.

i call BS on that. you can go to any game forum and the same cheap scumbags who pirate **** all say the same thing "i liked it so much after stealing the game that i decided to buy it" give me a fuckin break. you know you didn't go back and pay for anything

Calm your ******, dude.
Is it so hard to believe that people actually buy their games after pirating them? Or you just like to generalize in....general.

Yes.

I'd guess there are a few folks who illegally download games and then go on to pay for them, but I'm sure it's a very small number.

On the other hand, no one in this thread has presented evidence of anything being anything. Without statistical evidence, it's just so much internet rambling.

I pirated first Witcher when i was in High School. As soon I got a job i bought the game as a sign of support to the developer. And also, pirated Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines, but I liked that game so much that i saved for two months to get original copy. Games in Croatia cost as much as in UK, or Germany, same thing as with clothing and groceries, and on a average salary of 520EUR you cant afford 60EUR game that easy.
Also..with game companies being dic** and not giving demos, game reviewers completely and insolently lying about games i can see how someone would want to pirate something first and then buy it later if he likes the game. Also, i bought two copies of Deus Ex: HR to my brother and myself - i liked it that much. So...yeah...you are being rude.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but for starters, I don't pirate games so this does not affect me unless....

the drm causes performance issues or stability issues.  From everything I've read the impact is minimal to nonexistent from this technique.  I hope this drm is able to lock down the game for many many months to come.  It's not always online style drm, it seems incredible non invasive for people who actually buy the game.

The only group where it seems this will be an issue are the people who pirate games, and I don't care about them.  Some of them will throw tantrums until a portion of that population will actually buy the game directly.  This will increase sales, this will shore up the pc platform even more, turning it into the platform of choice for companies like bioware/EA.

You realize that by definition, piracy removes DRM, and as such pirates are PRECISELY the very and only people who AREN'T affected by them ?

Those who can't afford it or don't want to buy the game, won't. DRM doesn't change things one way or the other, as far as revenue/sales is concerned.

Well, actually it does, 'cause a part of these people refuse to buy BECAUSE of DRM.

I am not buying Ubisoft games cause of their DRM. It is just insane, servers crash often enough that i couldn't play and sometimes it does not let you save so i just don't touch, don't look or play Ubisoft games.
