What a seriously ugly facial aesthetic - Varric looks like he's been hit by a sledgehammer, paved over that with botox, run under a couple of dozen bulldozers for good effect AND had all his teeth knocked out....honestly???

 

As to Cassandra  - a cross-between - she can't decide whether she wants to be a Terminator on steroids or an ex-wrestler on speed - where'd ya get that jawline from for a woman?

 

I was ever-hopeful this was all concept art - doesn't appear to be - ugly ugly ugly - none of them are well-drawn - and yes, I have the right to comment, being a portrait artist of some repute if I put any of that work up in front of a client I'd probably be hit with a sledgehammer myself.

all the characters are ugly...its the theme.  its not just varric.  Leliana is hot...aside from that they're all like that.  Morrigan

 

It's like its part of the style or something i guess....i find it curious you only mention varric.

There was a full on ugly pass it seems, at some point in the development phases....Cassandra in the original teaser trailers way back was actually a relatively attractive woman who appeared to have a strong command of authority. Now she apparently is a "strong female character" which apparently means she needs to look like a man.....I think someone at BioWare has that all backwards but who am I to comment on aesthetics really.

 

Also with the lack of modding tools...what you see is what you will never be able to unsee...ever. But I guess if I was a professional game design studio I wouldn't want a bunch of no-industry-resume hacks making my stock character designs look 1000 times better than what I sold to people either.

I think is has to do with the new (frostbite) engine and all that.  I think they will prefect it all and the next game will be back to normal.  That's my opinion at least.

 

IMO its a small price to play for the massive gameplay improvements to the Dragon Age series.  But yes they are ugly.

It is not a deal breaker for me. I mean there are ugly people who walk with swaying hips - grandmothers in spandex on Poznanska street, for example - so what can you do... (it's rhetorical). They are part of the story. But they are not to my taste either.

I think they all look great, Varric's broken nose looks much better in DA:I then it did in DA2.

If you think sandpapering a woman's facial features off, then dunking her in a bucket full of make up before finally giving her a wig stolen from the girls' section of a toy store is an improvement, then sure a thousand times better.

Pretty sure this is backwards. I recall people complaining about how ugly and unappealing Cassandra's original design was and that went on until we started to see more recent footage and pictures of what she looks like now, with her looking more attractive, notably have a softer jawline.

Morrigan looks nothing like the trailers, I'll say that. She looks much more like her Origins self. And, to me, Cass looks much better than she did in DA2.
