What class for the first character, on that all-important, unrepeatable first playthrough?

From my experience with Bioware games, a lot can be said for playing warrior first, rogue second, and mage last.

The reasons are two. First, warriors tend to be easier to master* than rogues, and rogues easier than mages. And during a first playthrough there's lots more to learn than just the ins and outs of one's class. Second, I find it very difficult to play a warrior after having played a rogue, it feels so horribly pedestrian and the rogue high takes weeks to wear off. And after playing a mage, the thought of having to walk the lands as a mere mortal is simply horrifying.

This would indicate that I should do my first DA:I playthrough as a warrior, which fits well with the fact that my all-time favourite sort of class used to be magically enhanced warriors like Paladins and Jedi Guardians. That was before I encountered DA:O mage craft, though... And going the classic warrior - rogue - mage route could well mean that many moons would pass before I could enter Thedas again as my true, spell-slinging self.

Also, there is only one first playthrough, only one chance to experience a new world for the first time.

Decisions, decisions... What are your thoughts? Preloading won't even start until six o'clock tonight here, and unlocking is more than a day away. So there's still time to avoid tragic mistakes.

*) perhaps 'journeyman' would be a better word here; true mastership does not come easy in any class

I always play multiple rogues. I usually avoid warriors altogether for the reasons you state. Feel basic compared to rogue, and they're easy to master. Rogues just fit my style, but I will make a mage. Eventually.

My first playthrough in DA:O was a mage

My first playthrough in DAII was a mage

I plan on continuing my tradition of my first playtrough in DA:I as a mage

Mage FTW!!! :wizard:

Edit: After that I plan to play every class and race at least once

I think I'm going to be a mage, because I want to romance Cassandra and have her in my party most of the time, so making myself a warrior is more likely to be superfluous. I don't care for rogues that much, plus I'm interested in Varric, Sera and Cole more than I'm interested in Dorian and Solas. So, mage it is.

In most new games, I go with warrior type class first as well because it's easier that way to get the hang of the mechanics. But with DAI, I feel confident in the way the combat typically works in DA games so as to not be worried about that. I'll play as mage first as has been my intention since details of DAI were released.

It takes me a very long time before I replay even the few games I play (ie BioWare games); the fact that I have three Mass Effect Trilogy files and two DAO files (a game I didn't play until the beginning of this year, even) is testament to how much I love 'em. I doubt my second Inquisition file, assuming I love the game of course, will happen for a solid year or so post-release given its apparent size. So I really need to factor that into account as I decide.

Warrior versus Rogue is basically my huge question here. Well, that and Human Male versus Dalish Female. Ugh, choices. Such choices. Wow.

I played a Sword-and-Shield Warrior on Origins in January and then in September I went with a Dual-Wielding Rogue. I enjoyed both a fair bit, I suppose (I don't really think much about the combat in that game, but it was exciting enough). So now I need to pick one of the two in a brand new system.

thiiiiink I'm gonna decide based on which race/sex I roll. And I thiiiiink I'm gonna roll a Human Male my first run. So, Warrior. But I won't knoooow until around 1am tonight.

IMO mages are the best for a first playthrough. Differently from common opinion they are not more difficult to get the hang on from warriors (and definitely not rogues) and they are more interesting. Maybe it was the case on Baldur's Gate (where Mages and Sorcerers were surely more difficult to work properly) but for the DA universe it is not so.

I will do with the rogue, because my first DAO character was a warrior, and my first Hawke was a mage. Have to complete the circle.)

But DA series are the only ones I am equally happy with all classes and don't really have a clear-cut favorite.

Since there are now 3 games, I've spread about my canon among the 3 classes. Now it's a warrior for me. I liked my Warrior and Rogue Hawkes, but mage was too compelling. Now I get the chance to shine as a chantry warrior type.

Mhmm, so many mage votes already... Another aspect just occurred to me: the dependence of physical fighters on equipment and weapons. My warriors always drained their purses like there's no tomorrow whereas my mages had difficulty finding anything to spend their money on. Also, if the game throws your toon into a cell, naked, then the warrior will be seriously hampered but the mage is still a fully functional army.

A rogue and a mage together are an invincible army but either has a good chance even solo; by contrast, a warrior is dead meat without a support team. That has consequences for when our toons get stuck with companions not of our choosing; a mage will always have an excellent mage in the team, and a rogue will never want for a proficient rogue. A warrior can easily draw a very short straw there; a half-assed auto-levelled mage or rogue may even be worse than having no companion at all, since you got to protect them and keep them alive.

P.S.: what I disliked most about playing warriors was that you don't get efficient rogue and mage support unless you take control of your companions as well. That fragments the focus of the action. A mage or rogue can easily send warrior companions off to fend for themselves or to do a bit of tanking on auto/tactics...

Mage first, because the lack of healing spells means you should be able to use one mage and survive, unlike in DAO when I had to use two Mages, one of whom was a healer.

And if I only need to use one mage, I can have Cassandra, Iron Bull and Varric in my party for the whole game. That banter should be priceless, for a number of reasons. Troll-city.

I will play the prologue three times once for each class. Then after i have experience with each class I will make my choice go back into CC make my character then play the game. By the fourth time through the prologue i am sure i will know it like the back of my hand, but the rest of the game will be a mystery.

Rogue. I've tried other classes in DA games but I always go back to the Rogue. They just seem so right.

I lean to playing the warrior first.  After that I will play whatever I want to role play.

Like someone else just said:

My first playthrough on each game has been a Mage.  Always will be.  Its my favorite class, always has been.  But you bring up an important point.  If I were you, I would play your first playthrough with your favorite class.  You're right, you only get one First Playthrough - so I wouldnt waste it trying to play a class because you think you wont play it in the future.  I would make it as magical an experience as possible.  Besides, from the 6 hour trial I got to play the other day, Warriors have some verrry interesting abilities they have access to, and I dont normally play a warrior, but these abilities definitely make me want to play one in the future...and that is all I will say about that, dont want to spoil anything =)

I have this compulsion to open every chest and doors, so I have to play rogue first.

My plan was a tandem with elf mage and human non-mage, but I´ll try both classes and then move ahead with the one I feel more at ease with Rogue was fun in Origins, but DAII rogueclass was a very bad joke, getting 1 shot/knockdown locked by everybody (with maxed defense) and far worse damagers than mages.

I was going to play mage and take the Rift Mage spec, but after seeing some gameplay footage of a Tempest rogue and a guy crit 1000 on a dragon, I'm thinking my first playthrough will be with my elf rogue named Temerity. Now to decide on whether I should focus on daggers or a bow.

Played daggers-rogue in DA2. I beat the arishok pretty easily. Used Assassin and Duelist skill.

My first play through for DAO was Warrior Two Handed.

My first play through for DA2 was Warrior Two Handed.

My first play through for DAI will be Warrior Two Handed.

Outside of that, I am changing a few things. I was a human male for DAO and DA2 initial plays and then changed things up for the subsequent plays.

With DAI I think I will be an Elf Female first time, which is a big change up for me. Usually the firt character is me and decides pretty close to my on predilections. Being Elf and Female will challenge my default inclinations a bit, and I am still thinking about my initial reaction character traits. (I keep a little journal with the character traits for each player, basically as a reference, as well, I will likely start other characters a long the way.

I always go with a rogue on my first playthrough.  It's so I can open every locked chest and door in the game without having to worry about who's in my party. On my second playthrough and beyond, I can recall(or, at least, vaguely remember) what's in a chest or behind a door, so I feel less compelled to have it open.

I also found myself more capable of keeping rogues alive in the prior DA games...  I always seem to get my warrior PC killed at least once every three or four battles(that's why I've always played the warrior class last).  And I prefer to test mage spell combinations out with the NPCs before I play as a mage.
