The spawn of a human x dwarf relationship.

We know dwarves can't become mages, so I was wondering if that resistance would be passed down to their half human children?

I'm enclined to say yes they can since I would assume a dwarven mate would be attractive for families with magiclal blood in their line, and I can't say I ever heard of that before.

What do you think?

Doubt it. I think that the Dwarvern genetics, the allele or whatever that makes them unable to connect to the Fade would be dominant.

I am curious about Sandal though. He's obviously part dwarf but he's able to enchant objects similar to the Tranquil. It makes me wonder if he's a "half-breed".

Unless the half-dwarves are an old god baby, it is extremely unlikely they can be mages.

Dwarves are said to lose their "stone sense" and their magical resistance some time after becoming surfacers. If the reason dwarves can't be mages is tied to those things, then it's possible that the descendnt of a dwarf and a human could be a mage. The problem is that we don't anything about why dwarves don't travel to the Fade when they sleep, the nature of their magical resistance or what exactly their stone sense is, so we've no way of knowing. What is known is that there are no recorded instances of dwarf mages, even amongst surface dwarves.

The whole point of enchanting is that it is performed by people who cannot connect to the Fade; dwarves and Tranquil. This is probably because only those can "safely" handle lyrium, which seems to be necessary to create enchantments. It is stated that Sandal is special in that only older dwarves who work on enchanting and with lyrium most of their lives can match his level of skill. He's a savant, not unusual in that he can do it at all. I think it's unlikely he's a half-breed (though I'm not ruling it out) as he shows all of the standard dwarf traits (height, stockiness, muscle structure, etc.)

However, when in DA2 you

Is this even confirmed, that dwarves can interbreed with humans?

Yeah, it's mentioned in Dragon Age: Origins codex if I'm not mistaken, a codex that also mentions human x elven children always being human and elven x dwarven always being dwarven; that elves are "genetically submissive"

Dwarves that loose lyrium resistance don't start to dream. They only dream if they become a Grey warden during a blight

That's because those dreams are not caused by the Fade, but by the Taint.

Good to know. I knew about the elves + humans, but I couldn't recall anything about the dwarves.

The term is "recessive". Submissive is something different...

Sure, but I seem to remember reading it as that in the codex.

One thing odd about sandal though is... he basically predicts the future (inquisition) before it ever happens.  How could he know what would happen if he had no access to magic or the fade? he basically talked about the rifts and magic "coming back all of it"... if so... how did he know this would happen? i really hope that is explained.

  • Sandal: One day the magic will come back. All of it. Everyone will be just like they were. The shadows will part, and the skies will open wide.
  • Bodahn: Huh. What's this?
  • Sandal: When he rises, everyone will see.
  • Bodahn: By the ancestors, what's gotten into you, my boy?
  • Sandal: Enchantment?
  • Bodahn: Hmph. That's more like it.

this bit... is odd.. the shadows will part.. skies will open wide... magic will come back...

something is definatly odd about sandal... but im really curious how he knew this.

Submissive elves ARE an idea I could go along with. Stupid long-ears.

Only if you pick the green ending.
