is it really surprising that he is the way he is?

Nope. Its tragic. He had no chance. The system failed him. His parents feared what might happen to him in the Circle because of its ill reputation and so he never got proper training. And then of all the things that could've happened, his father nearly dies and Connor experiences such trauma that he summons a demon to keep him alive. And either Connor dies, or he goes to the Circle with a terrifying experience of magic. He never had a chance. He's totally stunted. Hopeless.

I'm sorry but in my version you are the monster. Not all Mages are to be feared but ugly (made by me) abominations are.

Poor boy. Still traumatized after all those years. Don't worry, I'll help Redcliffe again.

The "system" didn't fail him his mother did and ofc it was also Loghain's fault. I also doubt she did it because she  "feared what might happen to him in the circle", she did it because he wouldn't be able to inherit as a mage and probably also because she didn't want to part with him. Eamon didn't even know he was a mage.

Plus a noble women a pious one at that giving birth to a mage is pretty bad when it comes to politics hell Leandra parents found it hard to find a husband for her because there is magic in the Amell line.

No noble who cares a lot for their standing would marry into a family where they often "pop" out mages.

I spared him and in exchange he spouts heresy...

Time to feed him to the demon.

In the Tevinter Imperium, mage children are prized in their families because it is a mark of high status. They get sent to an elite prestigious school and the families become elevated to a higher class.

Outside of Tevinter, producing mage children is a stigma. People are taught magic is a curse. And mage children are taken away from their families and normal life and sent to a place where they're guarded by drug-addicted zealots trained to fear and kill them. And taught by religious doctrine that magic is a curse.

You don't think she feared what might happen to him in the Circle?

The old system failed Connor.

Connor made a naive mistake but it was his mother's decision to have Jowan teach him in secret. If she had told Arl Eamon he was a mage who knows what would have happened instead. Would he have met his end at the Circle Tower when Uldred rebelled? Would he have resented his father for putting him there and become an apostate? Or maybe he would have died early on from another plot to get rid of the arl. What happened is past. But now there's a chance to build on this character for the future.

The law that prohibits Connor from inheriting his father's title and lands is unfair in this current situation. A mage was able to own land in Blackmarsh even though he died by the land's curse. If Bioware is willing to continue bringing back these characters they should invest more in their futures.
