Is it possible to do this? I want to get the Tempest (the Locust and I are not friends) and Thane before the Illusive Man summons you, and given I tend to plan my post-Horizon route around maximizing upgrades and experience that won't give allow me to recruit Samara (Miranda LM, Thane RM, Tali RM, Jack LM, Mordin + Grunt LM)...unless I can get Samara's loyalty mission which will not only give me 7/7 Assault Rifles but another (better) barrier-buster so I don't have to recruit Thane. So far I haven't found a way to get Samara's LM until after the DCS (usually the order in which I get LMs are Jacob + Miranda, Jack, Mordin, Grunt + Garrus, everyone else), and I was hoping you guys would know a way around that, since I HAVE seen it done. I'm on the Xbox360, if that matters.

To get the DCS mission you need to have 8 squad mates. If you have 8 squad mates, then the 6th mission after Horizon will be the DCS. So the only way to get to her LM before the DCS would be to not recruit some other squad mates.

After Horizon go straight to Ilium and recruit her first. Then you might be able to get her LM just before the Collector ship mission.

 

Not 100% sure though.

Since I have done Thane's LM before the Collector ship, it should be possible.

When the missions come in is not related to conversations, but missions. The order, I believe is Miranda/Jacob after Horizon, Mordin after next mission, then Jack after next mission, then Grunt after another mission, then Garrus. So that's 4 mission complete screens you need to go through just to get the pre-Horizon squad mate loyalty missions. I am not sure how the post-Horizon squad mates (Thane, Tali, Samara) work, whether it is based on the order you pick them up, or whether they have a priority ordering like the pre-Horizon squad mates.

 

One option here seems to be to not activate Grunt. With him still in the tank he won't be able to give you his loyalty mission, which should bump up Garrus, making him 3rd, rather than 4th. That will allow a post-Horizon squad mate to be 4th in line.

I believe it is based on the pick-up order. ( <-- Not all post-Horizon squadmembers have to be recruited, making a fixed sequence somewhat messy)

Thane's and Samara's (not Tali's though, for some reason) LMs always triggered about 3 missions after I acquired them ( you are right it's missions, not convos).

There are always 5 missions after horizon, before the DCS triggers. So the fastest way would be, to do small side missions (Hammerhead, N7 Lost Operative and the like)

How many missions are before Horizon? Or do you simply have to recruit all the initial characters - Jack, Grunt, Garrus, Mordin?

Yeah, I think so too. This play through I went and got Thane straight after Horizon, then Tali and then Samara.

 

After that I did Grunts LM and then the Geth N7 mission in the Pylos Nebula (for the Damage Protection Upgrade). Before I talked with the Illusive Man to get the Collector ship mission Samara wanted to talk about her LM.  

 

So I think if you grab her first it should be possible.

I think if you do Kasumi and Zaeed's LMs before Horizon they will count towards unlocking LMs post Horizon.

 

The LM's are not based on conversations.

I just tried it twice mixing up the mission order, except Samara's whose I chose first.

 

E.g.

 

After Horizon, Miranda and Jacob ask about their Loyalty Missions (LM).

Went to Ilium to pick up Samara first. After that Jacks LM comes up.

I got Thane next and Mordin asked about his LM.

I went and grabbed Tali and then Grunts LM pops.

I did Grunts LM and then Garrus wanted to talk about his LM.

The fifth and last mission before the Collector Ship I chose the N7 Anomalous Weather mission. It's then that Samara wants to talk about her LM but you're locked into to talking to the Ilusive Man and doing the Disabled Collector Ship mission.

 

TL: DR - It seems to be the first few pre Horizon team mates (*non DLC) LM's take first priority after the actual Horizon mission. Samara's LM, assuming you have her, seems to pop just before the DCS mission.

 

 

* I have both Zaeed and Kasumi and did their missions as soon as I recruited them before Horizon. Don't know if that matters as their LM's become available when you meet them.

The tank can be opened at any time. In one playthrough I opened the tank after the suicide mission.

OK, although this thread is old, I wished to give a definitive answer on how to get Samara's LM done before the DCS. Its really quite simple: don't activate Grunt and pick up Samara before other post-Horizon squad-mates. With him still in the tank he cannot give you his LM and a post-Horizon squad mate will instead be 4th in line. I just did this in my current playthrough and took Samara with Area Reave with me to the DCS. She makes a very capable squad mate for that mission.

I usually end up getting Tali's around the samre time as TIM calls me about the collector ship

Yeah it does work. I did it in my latest playthrough.

Leave Grunt in the tank, then after Horizon go and recruit Samara straight away and she tells you about her LM a couple of missions before the Disabled Collector Ship.

 

After Horizon Miranda and Jacob always ask about their LM's first.

Then it's the pre-Horizon squadmates, Mordin, Garrus, Jack, (Grunt too if you let him out of course) in various order. Depending on when you recruited them. (But not sure).

 

So if you want to unlock Samara's Bonus Power, (Reave), or have her use it on the Disabled Collector Ship that's what you have to do.

I remember putting some thought into this problem my last playthrough. One way, as others have noted, is just to not wake up Grunt. That way Samara's LM can be completed as the 5th mission after Horizon.

 

The second way is an exploit. If you land again on the Normandy Crash Site your conversations with the crew will advance by one tick as if you had completed a real mission but the 5 mission DCS countdown will not decrement. That way you can unlock as many LMs as you like without doing any "real" missions. This is obviously a bug, I doubt the developers designed this on purpose therefore I never use this exploit. Cheating in a game you bought for fun is cheating yourself.

 

The third way is simple and allows for XP maximization. You recruit only ONE of Kasumi, Zaeed or Grunt, recruit only Samara after Horizon and complete all LMs + Lair of the Shadow Broker + all N7 planet scanning missions. DCS will be triggered immediately after you recruit either Tali or Thane (8 squad members required for DCS).

 

The benefits to this last approach are :

• Maximum XP for DCS mission.
• If Grunt is recruited (woken up) it is possible to take Grunt/Miranda to Horizon AND LoyalSamara/Thane to DCS. For most classes these are probably the most effective squads to be utilized in arguably two of the hardest missions in the whole series.

 

The drawbacks to this approach :

 

• If Kasumi is not recruited that means no Locust for most of the game. Not ideal for caster classes on insanity.
• If Thane is recruited last instead of Tali that means no Tempest for squadmates (they are pretty good with that weapon as long as you keep them from going Rambo). Not a huge deal because Samara can use the Vindicator and Thane can use the Mantis. They can switch to the Shuriken against husks.
• If Zaeed is not recruited some early recruitment missions can be problematic for caster classes on insanity due to lack of proper firepower. Not a huge deal if you can get Grunt early.
