Another quick question if y'all would indulge me...

Is DA:I meant to be running 100% CPU? It's the absolute only thing I have running when I look at Task Manager.

Well, the scuttlebutt is that the DRM works by constant encryption/decryption... which would be a very high-level CPU activity.

My Manly Inquisitor is being called "My lady" and referred to as "her"

Is there a patch fix for this?

Same issue here. Kinda messes up the roleplaying effect..

Well yes, but is it going to damage my laptop running at 100% CPU for long periods of time?

Talking about overheating, the CPU usage on boot (before The Black Screen of Death), the CPU usage does look extreme - I shot up to 99% at one point.

I strongly suspect that's DRM related, given the scuttlebutt about how it works is by mass-encryption/decryption of the exe.

I just checked that myself and it's at 70% for me in the main menu.

It's common for games to run at high CPU usage. Most of the time your CPU usage isn't fully utilized under normal usage. I mean, I guess if you have the game running all week and the fan doesn't keep the CPU cool, I would be worried. As long as your CPU is kept cool and not burning, you should be fine. It's fine if it gets hot, just not for long periods of time. If you smell something funny, stop the game and take a break.  :D

Check while the game is loading. Mine is 68-70%ish in the main menu (before the Black Screen of Death), but hits 99% while it loads it. It seems.... excessive.

I got rid of the stuttering with a Razer game booster and unlocking 60fps in cutscenes, but there's DXGI DEVICE HUNG error once in a while that causes the game to crash completely. At least I can now get past the character creation.

DXGI DEVICE HUNG seems to be gone after installing Direct X from the game folder : "G:\Origin\Dragon Age Inquisition\__Installer\directx\redist"

Make sure all the permissions and crap are correct...

Make sure Virus Scan leaves the game alone...

Close all other programs....before launching Origin/DAI...

Thanks for assuaging my worries, I really appreciate it. :)

I have a cooling pad, so we should be all good.

Has anyone had any luck fixing the black screen of death yet? I'm getting discouraged quickly and it's gonna boil into frustration very soon.

It's certainly annoying, but I found that if I just let it sit (as long as the logo in the bottom corner was still blinking) that it will eventually load. I was reading a book while I waited, lol.

Its not doing that for me though. The screen just goes black after the logo appears, music plays for about 10 seconds then stops. I have to go into task manager to even close the game down because it hard locks.

Sweet! Got a new thing to happen!... I have had the Black screen freeze problem and I decided to try the DXSETUP.exe reinstall that had helped some people.

Well, about that. It fixed my Freeze because now 30 seconds after 'Play' the application just closes itself. Wonderful.

So I get a CTD instead of a freeze. At least it's different. Still sucks, but in a different way.

Oh, ouch. Yes I've had that happen to me as well. I just restarted my computer and reloaded the game and it stopped fighting me eventually...

Sorry I can't be of more help.

So, what about that patch release for today? Is it for real?

Sorry and thank you for all your patience with me...

If Windows says my drivers are up to date, should I be trying the Intel drivers that people have posted? How do I know if I'm installing the right ones or if I'm about to do any damage to my system?

^^^^^^This is exactly what happens to me. I sent an error-report to Origin.

I am running Windows 7 -64 bit Ultimate/sp1

AMD Radeon HD 5450 2GB video card (Drivers AMD 14.301.0.0)

Pentium dual-core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz 2.70 GHz

4GB RAM and I have plenty of space on my harddrive.

ETA~I also did DXSETUP.exe reinstall

Made sure all permissions were granted to ME

What was this about a patch???

APPARENTLY, this is a work-around for dual core CPUS: https://downloadcent...x?DwnldID=24329

Download the drivers. I found the info from the EA support forum: http://answers.ea.co...994141#U3994141

Can someone with a dedicated GPU and dual-core CPU confirm? I'm confused because those drivers are for Intel HD graphics, the integrated graphics that comes with dual-core CPUs. Most of us have dedicated GPU's and would not be using our Intel HD graphics anyway.

True, I posted that find here from the other forum. It works for me, but as you say, I am using integrated graphics.

So this makes me wonder if it's a GPU problem and not solely a CPU issue. I mean, there are people on here with quad-cores who get the black screen with just the styled cursor, yet no error messages, and the game says it's running in tasks.

So I wonder if I pop out my GPU and play on integrated graphics, would the game work? I can't imagine the game would be smooth at all though.

Has anyone upgraded their CPU from a dual-core to quad-core and then the game worked? I plan on doing that hopefully by the end of the week when my processor comes in.

We could be getting the black screen and styled cursor thing for multiple reasons, though. It just really unhelpful that we aren't getting any error messages...

Are they safe though? Like I'm not going to mess up my system by installing these instead of the recommended ones?

I had the same trouble this morning. Downloaded the game and got the black screen of death. It just kept going back to my background after 10 secs. So, I uninstalled DAI and downloaded it again (was NOT happy having to waste 2 hrs to download again). While it was downloading, I went and updated all of my drivers. I also did Windows update also. Scanned for viruses and malware. After all that, when DAI finished downloading and installing, it was the same scenario.

So, I was just ehhhhh about it. Realized that my energy saving mode was on (I'm on my laptop) so I changed it to "Highest performance". Woolah. I'm playing the game mysteriously. o_O You don't exactly need the minimum criteria as I am playing on an i7 core laptop @ 2.2GHz and my graphics card is a mere Intel HD3000 lol Best of luck to everyone else in finding a solution to this problem.

I have a quad core above recommended specs and I can't play it at all.
