I truly hope that there will be a patch or a driver that gives this game better performance in certain areas of the gameworld. Hinterlands is really bad at the moment even when lowering settings. It really dampens the joy of exploration when the FPS is all over the place...

Exactly the same. Some areas have a bad texture or something that is making our game drop to 14-19 FPS.

I really want a Patch soon to continue playing.

YES THE GAME RUNS GOOD in some areas.

BAD in some other areas with green and rocks. (even at LOW)

Hmm, I got a fairly large performance boost by moving from Windows 7 to 8.1. Before I was at worst dropping below 40 fps on certain areas, but now I can maintain 60 fps in those same spots. Windows 8 has a few more features on DX11.1, which reduce the CPU overhead of the renderer compared to what you get on Windows 7. So if you're CPU limited in this game, it's something to consider.

Now if they'd just fix the SLI bugs, I'd be one happy camper.

Rig:

i5 3570k OC'd @4,3GHz

2x GTX 970 4GB

16GB RAM

I shall try Win 8 and Win 8.1 computers in my friends house this weekend.

I have a sapphire 7870, I am getting a gtx 980 (I was going to upgrade to it before the Witcher 3 anyway). Do people think that my processor is the problematic varriable here?  I have an Intel ® Core™2 Quad CPU  Q8400 @ 2.66GHz  2.67.GHz.

Major issues with performance. Perhaps it is my setup, though I can't see why the game is so resource intensive.

CPU: i5-3330S

GPU: Radeon HD 7600A

RAM: 8 GB

All settings at their lowest, except for mesh which is high (because I don't want everyone to look like they are covered in plastic, with oil for hair).

Resolution set at 1024x768 50 Hz.

Normally I cope when my rig is below the recommended specs but this gets quite painful, especially duing cutscenes. Long, slow, cutscenes, with awkward periods of silence after someone finishes speaking.

@Ignoble, your rig is not that bad. I can't see why you cannot play at medium to high settings... Tessellation is a ******, the devs even told PC users to try setting it to medium. Right now I have everything set to high except for textures (set to fade touched) shadows are set to medium, tessellation medium, and multi sampling off. I am still getting  some cut scene problems, and I find that the game, even after the load screen ends, takes another good 4 to five minutes to load, or I am stuck running around with lag for those few minutes.

Yeah, or even if it did not run at medium/high, I would settle for a decent performance at low.

I don't want to jump in and blame BioWare in case it is my bad, but I was expecting that I would have something playable.

There is one guy on here who has a gtx 780 ti, a quad core 4.47Ghz, 16 GBs of RAM, and he is still having problems with the game. When my gtx 980 arrives, I'm thinking that I will still be having problems. The game is just not optimized for PC.

For nvidia users, as far as AA goes, my best IQ/performance ended up being force FXAA on via nvidia control panel + AA post-processing to Low in-game + MSAA off in-game.  Looks basically as good as MSAA and frame rates are much better.

Tessellation is a nice feature... for screenshots. It just isn't worth the fps loss for what it adds to your visual experience as you play the game, in which the effect is negligible.

Is there a noticeable difference between High and Ultra in this game?

I will upgrade my card soon, and I am not fond of spending much money unless I will see a real difference...so what do you guys think about r9 270x...combined with my I7 920 2.67 and 8 GB ram..? Can I play smooth on High?and will I miss alot when I don't play Ultra?

A quick Google search shows your R9 270X to be similiar to my HD 7950. My card is overclocked quite a bit and averages above 60. Your card's average range on high would probably be 40-50. You won't miss a lot if you don't play on ultra.

what I know is that r9 280=7950 while 270x=7870 (more or less )..My current card is ati 5850 i haven't bought 270x yet...so, is 270x enough to play on high smooth?or 270x may give fps below 40?( I think 40 frames are smooth in this game...am I wrong?)

another question: have you played on ultra and found that there is no big difference? and is the quality on consoles equal to high on pc?

I gotta say it gets worse the farther I progress into the story. Any location with more than a few NPCs is killing the fps horribly. I'm running a gtx980 and overclocked i7 4790k and I can barely squeeze 40-50 fps in Redcliffe and I've got msaa turned off, shadows and terrain to high.

This is not a good optimization and current top gpu should have no issue running the game at 60fps at all times with msaa turned off. This definitely needs addressing along with the bloody stutter during cutscenes.

Man, I would recommend getting something better than a 7870 (if you can) that is what I have now, and my FPS and lag is painfully bad (it ranges from 14 to 45).I have the Witcher 3 pre-orded so I was upgrading to a 980 anyway. Still I think my cpu is a problem, Intel ® Core™2 Quad CPU  Q8400 @ 2.66GHz  2.67.GHz...

I have a 295x2 and i only get 25fps on ultra. Framerate is unstable. Even on Low or medium its around 30-40 but its not stable it will drop all the way to 10. Its unplayable. My rig should be running this a steady 60fps.

Found an awesome solution for me. I have a MSI HD 7870 and Intel i3(yeah). Running it at average 45(even at hinterlands and redcliffe village) on High Custom Settings.

I did the following:

- Disabled Origin in game

- Terrain quality set to low(but medium works as well). Don't worry, the most dramatic change is some pop in when you're fast with your horse.

- AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: I'm using the MANTLE API.

Running smooth as butter, really enjoying the game. Almost everything is on High, with some options(mesh and effects) on Ultra. I also put Post Processing on low(but that's because my pc isn't THAT good). Terrain quality on low with Mantle solved all the performance problems i was having. I hope it works for you guys too.

you sir, are a god. I'm playing on an i5 2500k @ 3.3 ghz 8gb ddr3 1600mhz and a DD r9 290 4gb graphics card.

At first I had like 40ish fps (sometimes dips to 30) in hinterlands, now I have 60, and the only thing I did was changing the Tesellation option from ultra to off, and I can't see anything different.. but maybe that's me.

still got the weird fps drops in some weird angles though..

Thanks tho!

On the upside I killed a dragon in the hinterlands the other day (ran into it by accident, boy was I surprised lol). That battle had no lag, or fps trouble at all. Then, I made my way to Redcliff....
