I'm having a bad time; averaging 10-15fps even on the lowest possible resolution (1040xsomething) and the lowest possible graphics settings.

My laptop isn't exactly a beast, but I should at least be able to handle low, shouldn't I?

Specs:

i5 3230m

2GB GTX 660m

8GB RAM

I've checked the obvious stuff- it is using the card and not integrated graphics, origin overlay is switched off, it's not in power saver mode, drivers are up to date. What am I doing wrong?

I'm playing with everything on high except the mesh quality and textures on ultra, and the multi sample AA is off (i don't know if it's useful or not).

I have rare random crashes with the directX error, mostly during charactor creation and prologue and i just had one during a cutscene a few minutes ago.

I disabled origin in game.

My specs :

i5 4590

GTX 760 OC 2gb

8gb ram

I haven't checked the framerate but the game looks very smooth. And as a sidenote i had planned to play on ps3, and got a chance to buy this pc, and wow i'm so glad i did ..the game looks gorgeous.

Just for reference, this is how you unlock the 30fps cap in cutscenes:

^^ you can also add it directly to the game icon by right clicking on it and going to properties and adding it after the inquisition.exe.

While running MSI afterburner in the background  I've noticed that my GPU load is under 50%  when I'm having less than 20 fps  in heavy areas.

Doesn't matter if I'm on low or high specs I still get crappy perfomance.

I'm ussing a Gigabyte GTX 760 2GB with 344.75 drivers.

Da Fuq Nvidia?

Keep reporting specific details like this. We need more people spelling it out for the devs with some actual stats.

Getting rather desperate here. :(

At first when I started the game I was getting absolutely terrible FPS (10-15 max). Tried everything, from disabling Origin, fiddling with the NVIDIA Control Panel, playing on ultra low... nothing worked and I came to the conclusion that those were 60 euros down the toilet..

However, someone here recommended setting everything on High apart from Antialiasing. I did that and after suffering through the initial cutscene with like 5 FPS, I reloaded my save. Suddenly I am getting stable 25-40 FPS which is then getting quickly and progressively worse and in slow motion to 10-15 FPS.

So yeah, still no improvement and it's rather unplayable. Anyone knows what the heck is happening with my game? :(

My laptop specs:

Intel Core i7 3610QM 2.3GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GT640M 2GB (newest 344.75 drivers)

Another laptop user here. Asus laptop is almost 3 years old with i7-2670QM @2.20, nvidia GT 540M 1GB, 8GB RAM and Windows 7. When I downloaded the nvidia driver, it said I don't meet the minimum system specs. Ran the game, it automatically set everything to low/off except the textures which were on medium. Game ran fine (I'm don't need high fps), ~20-25 fps with Fraps running in the background. Turned the mesh quality to high and textures on medium, the rest still low/off, left Fraps running and ran the game through Razer booster. Still ~20-30 fps, occasionally 40 and when it's very crowded it sometimes dips below 20, though never lower than 15, and never for long. I didn't turn off the Origin overlay either.

I was pretty worried my laptop wouldn't be able to run it (partially because nvidia gave me the "you don't meet the min specs crap"), but I'm 9 hours into the game and having a blast on my shitty laptop :)

Your laptop specs look rather similiar to mine. How come you get a more stable performance, even with FRAPS on? :o

Specs:
Phenom II X4 955
Radeon HD 6950 (2 GB) OC@880 through MSI AB (latest beta catalyst driver)
8 GB RAM

Nearly everything on high, except:
  • Textures: "Fade touched"
  • AA: Medium
  • Post-processing: Low
  • MSAA: Disabled
  • Tessellation: Disabled
  • SSAO

I get around 45 FPS on average, and never really get below 30 (resolution: 1920x1080)
Had micro-stuttering before, but not much in the last hours of gameplay.

Well, I finally got the game on Friday (UK).

My computer has an older cpu  - Phenom II 3.2ghz - so I turned most down to low and then raised what's important to me (like meshes to high obviously). GPU is more recent: Nvidia gtx 660 2gb.

It'd be helpful to know which settings are cpu demanding vs gpu.

So far my experience is that with the right settings fps doesn't drop below 30fps (which was my big worry). At least not so far (I'm in the hinterlands but not reached redcliffe village yet).

Here are a couple tips for anyone who hasn't discovered these things for themselves:

1) DO NOT force vsync through your video card driver. Allow the game to handle this; it seems to have triple buffering which makes a big difference + fps is higher all round.

2) Set "maximum pre-rendered frames" to 1 (this is with an nvidia card). I read somewhere that this would reduce the stuttering and hitching... and it does... which is the exact opposite of what should happen, right?

May be the processor is the problem indeed, some other people say 7870 is good on high with some settings ultra , some low,...but what settings do you use, ultra, high??In detail ..please.

A mixture of high medium and ultra, Mesh: Ultra, Tessellation: off, Texture: fade touched, shadows: medium, terrain: high, vegetation: high, water: high, post-process quality: low, ambient occlusion hbao, effects high, post-process antialiasing high, multisample off.

Still debating between buying a card for ultra or high...can't decide!

Is there any significant aesthetic change to disabling/lowering MSAA and Tesselation? How much of an FPS boost do they give?

Apart from the crashes caused by drivers and failure of optimization on BW's part, I've been playing well with little to no dip in FPS. (I'd say that it's at about 40 or 50)

My performance has gotten better the longer I've played the game. It's kinda odd, but I'm not complaining! I consistently get 40-60 FPS with high settings as well. Might dip a little bit lower if a lot of stuff is going on, but I haven't noticed any lagging so I'm happy.

Okay, here are my specs:

i7 3770k OC'd at 4.3GHz
1 R9 290x OC'd at 1100MHz clock, 1300MHz ram
8 Gb ram

Graphics setting to automatic puts pretty much every slider up to ultra.

I get the microstutters everyone else is talking about, but I am also getting pretty extreme framerate drops. My frame rate (using the debug code perfoverlay) sits at around 60fps in the main menu loading screen, drops to 30fps during cutscenes, and while running around in Redcliffe (the camp in the first quest), drops to an abysmal 8 to 20 fps.

Given my set up I have no idea what fps I should be expecting (I hear people talking about 50-80?! I've never seen that once during gameplay, not even close), but I know that what I'm getting can't be right.

Also, I've tried the game properties command that is supposed to remove the framerate lock and that command actually seems to have the reverse effect when I enter it, slowing me down way more, rather than speeding anything up.

Tweaking individual graphics settings (e.g., turning off MSAA) seems to do a bit of good at first, but then my framerate seems to drop back down to the teens all over again.

So... thoughts?

I'm in the same boat as you bud, except I've got a Titan Black (which is similar) and experience similar drops with everything on Ultra except Textures which are Fade Touched, and MSAA which is off, we're talking 30fps at Hinterlands starting camp and ~20fps in Redcliffe, around 40-50 inside Haven.

Try the following:

  • Turn off MSAA
  • Disable origin in game overlay (disable from game properties via origin).
  • Use Full Screen Windowed Borderless instead of Full Screen mode.
  • Turn on Vsync from the game or enable it from the driver to eliminate screen tearing.
  • Use the high pre-set and not auto or ultra and go from there. (HBAO, Medium Tessellation, MSAA Off)
  • Installed AMD 14.11.2 with clean install.
  • Enabled Mantle API from default DX11 (280x GPU)
  • Overlocked CPU if @ Stock.
  • Avoid running apps like Mozilla firefox or flash embedded content in the background.
  • Install the game to SSD.

Tessellation eats up something like 20 fps from ultra to off. Ambient occlusion and Tessellation are the biggest hogs in terms of performance. Try the above points and see how u both go.

Thanks @kingsims

I went ahead and uninstalled Dragon Age so I could do a clean install (just in case), so I'm waiting for that to finish. Another thing I did was I updated my AMD drivers to the latest beta version that supposedly fixes that issue. (Don't think that will help you planetsicle, sorry).

I'll post back when I get the game up and running again and try out your suggestions kingsims... and I'll definitely let y'all know if something works.

This game is crashing my entire computer at this point.  After character select, I get to the scene where my character gets surrounded by guards, and then my computer just gives out and resets.  Extremely frustrating.  :crying:

This is a new machine and it's been giving me other problems as well; had to reinstall Windows and start clean a couple days ago due to problems it was having during booting...finally got those seemingly fixed, and I run into this (I did have a couple crashes to desktop before the reinstall...but nothing this severe).

Running:

Windows 8.1

Intel i7-4790/3.6 GHz

8 gig ram

Nvidia GTX 760 (latest driver)

Read one place that something might be causing me to overheat, and to turn down CPU max power to fix that, but it apparently didn't (and doesn't really explain why it wasn't overheating before, but is now, unless it's just the part itself came bad and is wearing itself out quickly?).

Since posting earlier I have tried a number of things to try to improve performance on my machine. Sadly, none have really worked. The fps just doesn't seem to change much with changes to settings.

Essentially, I get no better than ~25-32 fps regardless of settings. I have run all settings from ultra down through to medium so far to see how much the fps changes, turned off AO, fiddled with AA (both in game and in NVIDIA settings), and even stepped down from 1920x1080 to 1600x900 and found that at best I get maybe a 5 fps difference (which I would consider to be within the statistical margin of non-significance and thus barely a factual change if at all). So very weird.

I also read a post that said that creating a user.cfg file containing the below in your DA:I directory might help (disables motion blur and enables fps on screen without the performance hit of running FRAPS and the like):

WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurQuality 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurMaxSampleCount 0
PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1

The above didn't make any difference for me, but others should feel free to try it if they think it might help them. You can also add these to the executable string in Origin through right clicking on DA:I and selecting "Game Properties". You then just add the commands with a hyphen at the beginning of them (there are plenty of tutorials on how to do this online - FYI tutorials relating to BF4 are also useful as they use the same engine).

I have never played BF4 myself, but given that it uses the same engine and has been out longer I went hunting for whether people could get that running nicely on rigs similar to mine. As I suspected, people tend to be able to run BF4 on high at 1920x1080 at nice frame rates on my exact rig. This leads me to suspect that the problem isn't my machine, it is the software - either at the driver (and yes I am on the latest NVIDIA driver) or the BioWare/EA end.

I am perplexed at this point and would love advice on how to boost my fps. Perhaps if they allowed me to force my machine to use DirectX 10 instead of only giving me the choice of 11? I found that worked nicely where the option was available on other titles (Batman Arkham City for example which under DirectX 10 runs at 60fps on higher end settings but chugs on DirectX 11 - to be honest I didn't notice the difference in visuals between the two either).

At my wit's end!

My machine:

Core i7-4700MQ

16gb DDR3 1600

GTX 765m 2gb

256gb SSD + 1tb HDD + 1tb HDD

You can use the dev console to toggle thee too, I believe. Certainly the FPS counter, so you can check out the FPS but not have it bugging you the whole game

New System
GTX980M 8 GB (updated drivers tonight)
i7-4910 MQ 2.9 GHz overclocked to 3.5.GHz
Win 7 Pro 64 bit
Have a 500 GB SSD OS and 1.5 TB HD

Just ran through the intro to Haven,
Have the microstuttering on the cutscenes. Only noticeable to me since everything else runs smoothly.
Ran at a pretty solid 60 fps with ultra settings, had a couple of moments where it dropped to 47 fps (mainly standing and looking t a busy vista).

So far I haven't noticed any other issues.
I was downloading and installing all my other games while I was playing.

I do have one weird Audio issue.
If I use my headphones, the voices (all of them, mine and people speaking to me) sound like they are really far away or in another room. Anyone have any ideas about that? Sounds fine without the headphones. These are a cheap pair. I played around with the Audio setting, TV, home theater, night, headphones, and it;s the same on all.......

To fix the headphone issue you need to force stereo mode, that will take care of it. It's an issue specific to when it tries to compress surround sound into two channels. You don't see it with your system speakers because it likely has more than two speakers, most high-end gaming laptops do, so this particular issue doesn't appear until you try to literally force it into just two channels, such as headphones.

Update:

I just spent several hours on the phone with Bioware tech support, trying everything under the sun. I was eventually elevated up the chain. Elevated support also failed to help, so I sent a bunch of data their way and the support technician said he was fairly certain that the issue I was having was related to the game (and would need to be patched). He also let me know that he'd check back with me if he heard of any fixes, so I'll make sure to drop you guys a line if I get any solutions.

All @ Ultra with a 780ti & i7 3770 @ 2560 x 1080

I concur with that. Seems like Hinterlands is a more demanding area; I was dropping to 40-45 FPS in crowded areas, and ~ 50-55 FPS everywhere else. But other areas I have been getting a consistent 60 FPS, only thing I have disabled is MSAA.

Anyone know 1-2 settings that I can drop a bit so that I can use MSAA? Currently getting 45-50 FPS if I put it a 4x :(

Also install the game on a SSD; loading is 10 times faster!

My specs are about the same as yours (Phenom X4 945 and a Radeon HD 6970 2 GB), so this gives me an idea.

So, I tried the benchmark with MSAA 2x and I got 12 FPS less on average (47 without MSAA, 35 with MSAA). So I think I will keep it disabled.

MSAA helps with edges, to make them look less like "stairs", but the cost is too high for me.

As for tessellation, it should smooth meshes, make them prettier (useful for more detailed "rocks" for example). But I don't see much difference I must say (I notice aliasing much more). The benchmark gives similar results, but if I go to the Hinterlands, I get, on average, 10 FPS less with tessellation on medium: without tessellation, I don't really get under 30 FPS and stay above 40 mostly. Also, I think that I had less stuttering when I disabled it.

Maybe I could get standard AA higher, but these parameters give me a pretty enough game with a consistent frame rate. I did not spend much time tinkering with the options though...

Edit: And then I got to Redcliffe for the first time... 25 FPS on average... :-/
