Some applications and games just don't work well with steam resident. It's very very few (and old) but enough that I don't have steam launching on boot-up. Really EA should be able to fix this for DA:I as this isn't some geriatric program with a defunct api.

So im getting pretty shoddy frame rates, by that i mean micro stuttering, being unable to maintain a flat 60fps on maximum ulta graphics or even with the AA/vsync and other stuff off/turned down. Ive tried most of the fixes floating around on the net so far with zero help. Although i dont seem to be getting this cut scene bug that everyones talking about. I get black screen freezes and CTD instead, and happening infact in specific areas or places in the game world (when i walk up to one of those shiny skull telescope things) without any error dialogue ***EDIT Just got my first dx dialogue error***

It seems there is something going on with the drivers or game core because my rig isnt being stressed any more than when i play BF4.

i7-4770k OC 4.5GHz watercooled

Crossfire HD7970 Ghz 3GB (1000MHz core/1500MHz memory), R9290X 3GB (1000/1500)

16GB RAM 1866MHz

Win 7 Premium 64bit

1920x1080 60Hz monitor

Ive played many games with this setup and the only ones that ive had to dial back graphics settings from maximum ultra is Crysis 3 and BF4 (AA/HBAO settings). Then they will run a flat 60 frames seamlessly without any micro stuttering, frame lag bullshit.

After installing the AMD 14.11.2 beta drivers i thought i cracked it. Ran solidly on max settings with good fps and little to no stuttering for about 8 hours gametime over 2 days

However today i cant even ****** get 5 minutes into the game without it crashing to desktop giving a direct x OR mantle error (tried both), then proceeds to freeze the pc completely, i have to turn the pc off manually with the power button.

I hope this isnt another "Beta-field 4" episode because its doing the same **** that ****** game did to me.

I think the devs need to start doing beta testing on a much larger variety of rigs and pc systems before cashing in their chips.

First my specs:

4 GHz AMD FX8350

16 Gigs DDR3 1600 memory

2 Gig GTX 660

OS: 64 Bit Windows 7 Home edition

I'm not getting the FPS issues like many people are, instead it's causing a major load on my CPU, often 80% while there's less than a 50% load on my GPU. This will cause my CPU to overheat and shut down to prevent damage. I have tried reducing the graphics to low (which I shouldn't have to do, but well, I want to play!) and it hasn't made any difference.

This is the only game that's caused this issue so I'm more than a little baffled.

If 80% load can cause your CPU to overheat, you definitely need a better CPU cooler or there is something else wrong with your computer.

IMO, any computer that is built properly should be able to handle 100% load for more than 24 hours without any errors or crashes.

Correct. It sounds like he/she is suffering from bad cooling; a CPU should be able to run at 100% for extended time.

Specs:
AMD FX-8320
8GB DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM
AMD Radeon R9 270X 2GB

OS: Windows 8.1 64bit

I have almost everything on high (playing in 1920x1200 resolution) and my framerate is usually somewhere between 40-65fps. Most of the times slightly above 50fps.

But only in DirectX mode .. when I try Mantle, then it's MUCH WORSE. It drops even to like 8 fps (8-50 fps), so it's unplayable. What the hell AMD .. and yes, I'm using the most recent (beta) drivers.

It doesn't bother me much, because DirectX mode runs quite good, but what bothers me is, that for some reason I'm getting random crashes to windows without any error message.
It happens mostly during combat, but not always. And interesting thing is, that it didn't happen before like 8-10 hours of gameplay .. until then it was without any crashes or major problems.

But I didn't install anything new and even tried to turn off every sw running in background except for Origin and antivirus (maybe I will try to turn off my antivirus next time it happens) and it crashed anyway.

Sometimes it crashes once an hour/two and sometimes more often (like 3 times in half an hour)..it's a little bit annoying :-/

This sounds exactly like what I was encountering.  The initially recommended suggestion I found (which didn't work for me but apparently did for the suggestor, was to go into Power Options in the control panel, choosing the plan, and advanced power settings, and reducing the Maximum processor state down to ~85%.

As noted above, what finally did seem to fix it for me was just a complete reinstall, into my SSD rather than on my HD.

Just wanted to say that I upgraded to a GTX 970 from a GTX 760 and the fps increase is definitely noticeable. Would recommend this for anyone thinking about it. Can now play with everything on Ultra and no aa with 70fps+. With 4xaa its around 45 max. :(

Getting rather desperate here. :(

At first when I started the game I was getting absolutely terrible FPS (10-15 max). Tried everything, from disabling Origin, fiddling with the NVIDIA Control Panel, playing on ultra low... nothing worked and I came to the conclusion that those were 60 euros down the toilet..

However, someone here recommended setting everything on High apart from Antialiasing. I did that and after suffering through the initial cutscene with like 5 FPS, I reloaded my save. Suddenly I am getting stable 25-40 FPS which is then getting quickly and progressively worse and in slow motion to 10-15 FPS.

So yeah, still no improvement and it's rather unplayable. Anyone knows what the heck is happening with my game? :(

My laptop specs:

Intel Core i7 3610QM 2.3GHz

8GB DDR3 RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GT640M 2GB (newest 344.75 drivers)

Your laptop specs look rather similiar to mine. How come you get a more stable performance, even with FRAPS on? :o

Sorry, late reply!

I'm a nitwit when it comes to computer specs, but my settings for the game:

In-game:

Mesh quality - high

Textures - medium

Everything else - low/off

V-sync - on

In the Nvidia configuration panel:

V-sync - on

FXAA - enabled

Like I said, it runs rather stable with 20-30 fps on my laptop, which is, if you're used to low fps, pretty perfect, with Fraps turned on. Fps obviously varies depending on the region I'm in, more populated places make my fps dip below 20, but never lower than 15. Not sure what's going wrong in your game, but since a lot of people with much better specs than me seem to have trouble running the game smoothly, I guess we just have to wait until Bioware patches this. Which is a shame, because the game is wonderful so far.

I have to add though that I did have a terrible fps experience once; started the game and it was giving me 10 fps at max while it was running fine the day before, and the audio was very distorted and completely messed up. Not sure what was going on or what caused it, but restarting my laptop fixed it.

CPU: Intel i5 2500k OC'd to 3.8GHz

GPU: Asus 6950HD with unlocked shaders and OC'd by 10% power (latest AMD Catalyst)

RAM: 8GB Crucial 1600MHz DDR3, stock.

HDD: 128GB Samsung SSD (primary drive installation where paging file is disabled entirely)

OS: Win 7 64-bit SP1

Game Settings: Ultra by default

The first thing I noticed before I'd even loaded the game for the first time is stuttering on the BioWare logo load!!!!  This, I thought, is not a good sign.  Queue more stuttering on the menu page where I can wait maybe 10 seconds for action to catch up then the men march past at light speed for a while.

The Benchmark feature was also horrible and jumped up and down the FPS scale like a yo-yo.  My average result was something like 34FPS but there's no way that's what I saw on the screen.  The lowest figure (16FPS from memory) just didn't match up with what I was physically watching given that it noticeably froze for large segments of the demo.

Stuttering in-game is usually during cut-scenes and not so bad during actual game-play.  That's not to say it's not there, it is, but bearable.

Very surprising given my specs and that I get no worries with other games.

I'm a she by the way. ;)

As for the heating issues, this is the first time it's come up for me on this rig. I did run Heavyload testing on CPU and GPU that didn't cause any overheating, so that's why I figured I'd post here. I'll try Lazarillo's suggestion tonight to see if that helps. Sadly, no SSD here, but I do have another drive I can try to install it on to see if that will help.

An update.

My build:
gtx980
i7 4790k
16gb of ram

According to 3DMark my build is in top 4% of performance of all tested rigs.

I've already lowered a lot of settings to high, disabled MSAA and I still can't get solid 60fps when in locations with just a little bit more than a few NPCs.

It's Frostbite 3. The game is big but doesn't look much better than Battlefield 4 did and I easily pushed 60fps with that game with my old gpu - gtx780.

This kind of optimization is unacceptable. Frostbite 3 can handle large crowds. Bloody Battlefield 4 has over 60 people on screen at the same time sometimes and it still runs smooth as silk. Here any more than 8 and it stutters like crazy.

Hell. Total Biscuit runs two gtx980s in SLI and even he can't get a solid 60fps with msaa on. He can only push (barely) 60fps if he disables MSAA completely.

This is not a good optimization and along with poor controls is a show of bad faith towards PC players. It was clear in the development of the game that PC wasn't BioWare's priority with this game (despite them claiming otherwise) but even if it was last on the list, the game should have been delayed further and released properly optimized.

This is not how earning back the trust should look like.

And the worst part is the game is good. If it ran properly and was possible to play with mkb it would deserve a 9 at minimum. But like that it's maybe a 7.

I'm crashing like crazy too, same as you, no error, no warning.  Somtimes it'll quit out when I'm paused, doing nothing at all.  What fixed the crashing for me was putting the game from Fullscreen to Windowed Fullscreen.  UNFORTUNATELY, Crossfire doesn't work when games are not in fullscreen, so it disables one of my video cards.  Currently I can either play with 60fps and crash every 10-15 minutes, or play for hours without crashing at 30-35 fps.  Both options are not OK with me.

I am not unsure if my issues are caused by Crossfire, or by Fullscreen mode.  I'm going to disable Crossfire manually and try to play the game in regular Fullscreen and see if it still crashes, if not, then it's Crossfire, if it continues crashing regardless then it's Fullscreen mode casuing some kind of issue.  I have tried everything I can think of short of deleting and re-installing the game, which at it's size I'd prefer not to do if I can avoid it.

Core i5 4670k, MSI Z87-G45 Gaming, Corsair 8GB DDR3, Corsair TX650, XFX Radeon HD7970, win7 x64

45-60 fps on "high", no problems with crashes, freezing, frame drops ...everything runs smooth and fine.

Terrible optimization is terrible.

I haven't had any crashes except on the main menu screen. Sometimes the game will just lock up there for no-reason (I think it's a network issue as most often happens when the game is loging into ea servers).

I'm running on a Titan Black with a i7-4930k @4.2mhz with everything maxed besides MSAA (which is off) at 1920x1080. And I cannot hold a solid 60fps it regularly drops down to the 30-45 fps range. I've been only testing the performance for a few hours and haven't experienced any crashes or stutter but the frame rates are quite disappointing.

Exactly the same issue for me.

Phenom II x4 955

R9270x

8GB Corsair DDR3 @ 1333

Windows 7 64 bit.

And I am playing on 1920x1080.

But also settings mostly on high, except textures on ultra and one or two things turned down a bit. My fps on DirectX are the same as yours. Never ever below 40, avg 50ish.  Same settings in Mantle are unplayable.

So is the R9270x the culprit?

I didn't have any crashes so far, however.

Yeah Mantle is not working that well for me either. Considerably worse fps than with DirectX.  With DirectX I found the settings that work really well for me, so I'll stick with that.

MSI R9 270 2gb gaming edition.

It did crash for me to desktop without an error message, but once I disabled the Origin in-game overlay it solved the crashing issues for me.

You can do this, but make it 99%.  Going from 100% to 99% drops the power draw on my 125w Phenom 955 to about 75w from it's normal max of 117w, as well as underclocks it to boot.  It's much more than a 1% difference.  You'll notice the performance hit as well, but before I undervolted my CPU to normal to counter my heat issues a new motherboard  gave me by having it set too high, I would do this.  I went from about 63-65c on max load to barely hitting 50c.  But the performance hit was huge.

The BIOS for my motherboard had my CPU's voltage set to 1.4, which is much higher than it should be for my CPU, So I set it to 1.3 and all's peachy.  (Undervolting doesn't damage your CPU, it may cause instability, so that's where you increase it until it's stable)   Overvolting can damage it, however

Intel i7-4700MQ 2.4 GHz / 16 gb ram / GeForce GTX 780M with nvidia driver version 344.75 and intel HD graphics 4600 and i am getting realy realy bad FPS. Lowest settings possible with 1440x900 with resolution scale down to min i can only get 45-55 fps in Skyhold and without the scale 22 fps. If I try my native resolution of 1920x1080 with all settings as low as possible (without the scale) my fps drops down to 7!. I should at least be able to play this game on high settings with this hardware I believe. Something is terribly wrong with compability in this game or the drivers.
