I really hate the pc controls and the way it plays out. Clearly it was made for consoles.  :bandit:

PC Tactical controls are a definite fail.  Prior Dragon Age releases. had it down pat, why the change

Yep. This.

This is what I've had to do so far to get combat working.  I'm only on normal, though.

I have my tab-loot set to toggle on my kb, so it autopresses every 25 ms

I'm not happy about the control schemes on the PC either. I have a Microsoft XBOX controller and I only use it for sports games, but I absolutely hate it using First Person Shooters when a gaming mouse and Nostromo Gamepad allow you so much freedom. This is going to take some getting used to, but why? Dragon Age Origins had it perfectly done in my opinion and Dragon Age 2 wasn't so difficult to learn. I also have to say that this is the last time I buy anything as a preorder from Bioware again. I can't get the game to play tonight because of game-breaking FPS issues and AMD's beta driver for Inquisition still doesn't fix the issues. I miss pre-EA Bioware.

It's not as doom and gloom as some people  say it is, but it's definitely the game's biggest flaw and a downgrade from the smoother control scheme and tactical camera of Origins.

First, there's no reason whatsoever as to why auto-attack is disabled in action camera. Like, just thinking about it when typing this makes me confused as to why the hell is that a thing.

Second, tactical camera isn't zoomed out enough to do its job. If anything is far enough, you need to move it... just like if you were in 3rd person mode. It should have at least 50% more maximum zoom.

Third, the camera often gets stuck in geography, so in dungeons it's kinda pointless to us unless, again, you just move it in a third-person view which kinda defeats the purpose of having one.

It's usable I suppose, and the combat is very fun otherwise, but a far cry from the optimal camera setup of Origins. It works fine against run of the mill encounters, but I'm kinda apprehensive about fighting really hard fights like dragons with it. It's a shame, the game is superb otherwise, but the changes to the control scheme just seem uncalled for and detract from the experience.

I wouldn't call the DA:O camera setup optimal. I often found that I could see better with tac cam off, if the enemies were at more than medium range.

Going to put in a request for a refund from Origin.

Bioware f'd things up again when it came to the PC version of a Dragon Age game.  That's twice now.  How hard is it to use the same control scheme used in DAO?  Is it really that difficult?  Makes me sad and angry as a long time PC gamer to see these games designed around using a controller and playing them on a console.  Absolutely pathetic.

It wouldn't have been as bad had they let you keybind actions to mouse buttons but you can't even do that.  Can't believe I was suckered into buying this game after watching a video they put out a few weeks ago showing off the tactical camera and talking about how they were all PC gamers and played the Baldur's Gate games and they wanted to bring back those controls to DAI.  What a load of sh-t!

and yet DA 1 & 2 doesnt have them and what are you an EA emplyee ?

DA:O and DA2 didn't support controllers, yep. Some PC gamers have been asking for controller support for years (don't ask me why). They finally got it. Is this supposed to be a bad thing?

This is not the same question as whether or not the PC interface works.

So I played two hours yesterday and the combat was somewhat annoying and awkward. I agree with all the points listed in the starting post. Some of them I’ll be able to get used to, others I'll have to grudgingly deal with.

-My biggest gripe with the new controls is camera’s behavior. The tactical camera doesn't zoom out enough. When I pause the combat and try to jump between my team to issue commands or try to see more of the battlefield, the combat unpauses!

-Second, the absence of auto-attack. I don't understand why it was removed and I miss it very much. Please, Bioware, bring it back!

-It seems like the controls were meant to control only one character at the time, while others characters would rely on AI, with such controls its very difficult to micromanage party.

-Also, it’s highly subjective, but I feel like enemies are moving much faster than my characters, and the clunky WASD movement only worsens the situation.

I get it that Bioware tries to reinvent and streamline the combat but I find most decisions questionable at least. Not every pc gamer has a gamepad after all. That said, I won't give up on DAI, I’ll try to get used to new controls because I enjoy every other aspect of this game.

I don't get why they did not just keep the controls from the first two games, I feel like this game is just fighting me at this point.

There is a video they said they design the game on PC, obviously what they mean by PC is console controls.

Its one reason its important to have a real PC gamer playing the game in development phase to tell them, this **** cant be released until this is there and works.

like binding to mouse buttons if that isnt there its like what?

It certainly isnt bad.

But the controls do have issues imo. And many people will be thrown by some changes if they are used to them from previous games.

I really want Mouse 4 and Mouse 5 to be bindable (sp?).

This^^

I am using controller now just because, with other issues, i.e. not following target in combat, its just makes things simpler.

Question, can you rebind ability slots with abilities when using contrtoller? For KBM you just drag and drop the abilities, dunno how to do it with controller.

Talking of PC controls...

Does anyone have a key map of the controls? I am hoping to re-map them to my game board and cant find any website with them.

Has anyone tried this with a G13 and a mouse?

Dear Bioware, please COMPLETE the PC UI. That'd be great, thanks!

Lets try not to bicker.

Im giving info in the OP for people who are used to DAO and DA2 so they now how different some changes are.

Some are in my opinion good, some are bad, some awkward but can get used to.

Hopefully Bioware will improve some of them.

The highlight pulse is purely a controller mechanic. Pressing down on one of the sticks to send the pulse out. For the PC it could easily be changed to a hold the key to highlight items toggle. The highlight needs to be more obvious too.

Updated OP.

Good luck with that. EA refused to give me a refund for no reason at all.

Updated with info about Inventory and Skill tree menus.

Spoiler : I think DA2 had better screens with better layout of info.

So apparently the spacebar is the loot all key.

Odd. Would have made more sense on F which is already the loot key.

Will check out later when in game.

If they want to use a controller they should go buy a console, pretty redundant to use a controller for DA1 & 2 as the mouse and keyboard works fine.

Oh wonderful, another stupid controller function that screws up the playing experience for PC users.

To me a PC is about options.

The ability to use a controller is a good option. But it becomes bad with bad planning, implementation and bad UI menus which affect M+K use. Unfortunately thats what we got.

Added an annoyance about not known what loot is junk, as im a horader :)

Well they added a controller option in DA 3 and the mouse and keybord interface is a piece of crap, looks like the majority of us keyboard and mouse users got screw over by these minorities wanting a controller option. I say ban this option from future PC releases.

Really great post, thank you! I still feel the game is completely promising, but yes the controls definitely threw me when I first got started. I've been experimenting with different keybinds and that seems to help. But yes I think the biggest issue is that your character won't automatically move to enemies, loot piles, interactables, etc. anymore. It makes for a lot of fumbling trying to get lined up properly with WASD. I have a 360 controller here and plan to try that today, not that that's a solution for those who want to stick with keyboard and mouse. But again, constructive threads like this are how we're going to get this fixed! Cheers.

Edit: Oh one other thing I thought of, it would be very helpful if we could have two keybind slots for each command. That way we can bind functions to both a key and a mouse button. And as OP stated, being able to bind mouse 4, 5, etc. would be HUGE. As a suggestion, you can often rebind these buttons in either your mouse software or AutoHotkey to something like [ and ] (seldom used in games) and bind them in-game that way.

refund isnt enough you should also have compensation.

to change EA stance a good class action suit is needed.

if PC have bad controls, dont release on PC fix that and release later when PC is up to snuff.

Added that i would like an option to lock the minimap north in place and rotate the central character icon instead.
