If by chance people could take a step back and imagine a world where they're without power (like yourselves now ;)  )  Then imagine that mages walked the earth who could do unimaginable things and worse still,  practice in the dark arts of blood magic the very idea if witnessed in real life would scare the living ****** out of anyone,  then you would understand why I chose to join the templars.  Fear motives the actions of man.  I think,  in realistic terms,  most people would fear and loath mages.  I chose the most realistic response.  I think the fear itself would also be born out of jealousy so you're dealing with the hatred of mages on two fronts.  The fear of being controlled by others more powerful and the fear stemming from jealousy that they are so powerful.

....and also 50% of this community are mage players.  I like to think I'm destroying most of you :D

But not for the best.

What is it not for the best?  There is a legitimate argument that mages have too much power.  Should everyone have access to nukes?  Why should only some?  Who decides?

Decisions made based on fear, there are plenty of examples in the real world.

Yes but just because someone is motivated by fear doesn't mean they're wrong.  I fear ebola...   should I do nothing about it?  I also fear the idea of people walking around with blood magic if such a thing existed.  It would be truly horrifying.  I would want them dead.  Is that illogical?  At least the Chantry provides mages a safe location where they can live out their lives in relative solitude and peace.  ...  or at least they used to.

No but the decisions made about how to handle it might be misconceived based on that fear.

There's plenty of ways to defend against mages in Thedas. Templar abilities don't require the Templar order. Of course people are going to be afraid of mages when the means to defend against them is also kept secret.

Just because one or two mages revert to Blood Magic does not mean all mages do.

Anders awakened my eyes in DA2 after Hawke's mother. When my Hawke responded, "Maybe the Templar's are right."  Then Anders said, "If it will make you feel better then blame me." I thought on that and changed my opinion.

I love mages, I agree with the rebellion. I however do not like Blood Magic or those who practice it. I have ZERO problems zapping to death another mage using such arts.

Furthermore I believe Andraste was a mage and her famous words, "Magic should serve man, not rule over him," were taking out of context. I believe those words were meant to say, use magic but use it to help people not vi for power.

The Chantry uses the Mages as means to gain their highest source of income and they allow Templars abuses towards mages to go unchecked with out even a tongue lashing. Ser Alrick was going to rape a young mage, and The Chantry finds that OK? And don't get me started on Grand Cleric Elthina, what a pain in my ass she was.

Do I hate all Templars? No. Thrask was at least trying to show that Templars don't have to be assholes to mages. Too bad most Tempars use their position and power to get away with treating mages like sh!t below their boot.

I for one would not want to be a female in a Circle. I'd end up sleeping under my cot, with a very large knife.

<Shrugs> But that is just my opinion.

Not everyone is a soldier or a templar to defend themselves from a mage who decides to abuse that power.  Kirkwall was a horrible example of how the Chantry can abuse their power but that doesn't mean the premise is wrong.  As soon as a mage loses their cool (as we all have) you're liable to have serious consequences for letting them walk freely.

Blood magic is nothing more then an extremely evil method of using magic.  Most forms of magic can be use to harm, blood magic or not.  That is the point...  regardless if someone has good intentions they can still abuse the power given to them simply because they can.

Sure, the average farmer probably couldn't fight an experienced blood mage even with a handful of lyrium dust.

But he also can't fight the average level 2 adventurer. Or a noble's personal bodyguard. Or a regular Templar strung out on lyrium. He's powerless period. So he doesn't get to be an example.

Having templar capability in the city guard would close the gap with the rest of crime.

What people decide doesn't really matter in the end, because unless the magic simply goes away for good, there's always going to be a percentage of the population that has it regardless. Even if the Templars decided that all mages should be tranquil, they'd never get them all, and there will always be a certain population that has it, by their will or not.

I am so glad I killed Connor.

You know, most people wouldn't be happy about killing a child :P

Mages...I think...yeah, mages. But the whole Trevelyan family being close with the chantry and Templars makes me want to add to that to create a story.

You know, that's an incredibly awesome point you make there! Thanks! I'll have to take that into consideration.

I will save whoever irritates me the least and/or whoever has the nicest butts.

LMAO that's one way of thinking of it.

I favor the Libertarian Fraternity's approach. I agree with the Circle of the Magi as a concept, my problem is that non-mages are essentially running the show. I'm of the opinion that many of the mages' problems would simply dissolve if the Circles were allowed to self-regulate, mages in the interest of other mages. I haven't really spoiled all of the possibilities for myself, but I'm hoping there is an option like this somewhere in the DA:I.

As to the topic question: right now I favor the Templars, since demons are wreaking havoc across the planet, and Templars are elite combatants trained to dispel hostile magic and not at significant risk of possession to bite me in the arse.

But I may opt for mage support first if there is some question of the Inquisitor's mark needing more power. Somehow I do not think Cullen is right about mages and Templars being interchangeable for that task.

You're like Anders but in Templar form :P

Anders is rebellious but for good reason.   Mages were being abused.  Had they not,  things would have stayed the same. It's the knight commander Meredith and her cronies that empowered Anders to extremes.  Had mages continued to be treated with respect but within a cage where they couldn't harm others,  everything would have been fine.  DA2 was successful at making Templars look evil, even though they're not.  Just one more reason I disliked DA2.
