Anders is rebellious but for good reason.   Mages were being abused.  Had they not,  things would have stayed the same. It's the knight commander Meredith and her cronies that empowered Anders to extremes.  Had mages continued to be treated with respect but within a cage where they couldn't harm others,  everything would have been fine.  DA2 was successful at making Templars look evil, even though they're not.  Just one more reason I disliked DA2.

Personally, I felt that elements like Ser Alrik and Ser Kerras were a pretty natural inevitability in an order such as the Templars. If you get a group that by its own laws considers it a divine right to hold dominion over another group, you're bound to have certain elements that go a bit farther than some would like, especially if oversight is spotty at best. But anyway, we only saw a small fraction of the Templars acting like this in DA2. Meredith was pushing it, but the only real problem I have with this is that you have to support the Templars in order to probe her for personal information, revealing why she feels the way she does.

Love it when Bioware is being all pro-choice. That said, no matter how many times I playthrough, I'll probably always end up siding with mages. Ever since DA:O, where I learnt about tranquility, it sealed the deal for me. Denying someone the possibility of ever dreaming is something my character can never forgive.

Mages. I haven't gotten a chance to play DAI yet, but that's my intention. I've no intention of killing innocent mages, powerful or not.

Helping the mages mean I get to recruit Dorian earlier, so they win.

Side with the templars if you are going for hard+ achievement.

Sided with mages. Not going to spoil anything but lets just say that defending a certain trebuchet is impossible. Like 100% impossible. Like.... not even with tactical camera and a free re-supply next to it. Just wasted 14 hours, had to reroll.

Well there's already a sense of favoritism towards the mages

And I think its justified, and its not the first time. There is favoritism in DAO and DA2 as well albeit slight. (elaborated later in this post)

Mages will be killed or turned tranquil if they lose, most of them anyhow.

Templars are craving for their junk, that is why they are becoming red Templars if you side with mages. No one is going to kill Templars who stand down. They can lay down they arms and its over but mages cannot stop being mages.

Its always like that for mages, dying. In DA2 if you side with mages you will still fight blood mages and abominations just like when siding with Templars. The city will be saved and Aveline's guarsmen will protect civilians in both outcome however in Templar side more mages will die, not to mention mages had nothing to do with Chantry incident. There is literally no moral reason to side with Templars, the outcome is the same in both sides except if you side with Templars more mages who did nothing incriminating will die.

Its the same in DAO, the circle will be saved no matter who you side with but if you side with Templars more mages will die and you cannot save Connor.

Its a game and its a perfectly valid reason to side with Templars if you like them or you value security over anything. But lets just be clear that its not the morally correct choice, its always mages who die.

Who you side with also apparently determines who you get a rival quest from.  If you side with the templars you go after Leliana's opposite working for Corypheus. If you side with the Mages you get a quest from Cullen going after his opposite.

Could you elaborate, please? You get a quest to get Templar support from Cullen after you side with the mages, and you get a quest for Mage support from Leliana if you side with the templars?
