Yeah ever since they released those gameplay videos I've been worried how the kb+m will perform, but I told myself it would be like DA2 so no cause for worry since that worked for me just fine. Now people are saying all kinda of stuff...meh, I'm fine with controllers but I prefer playing games like this with kb+m.

Played about 3 hours last night, slept on it. Here are my impressions in order of their impact as of right now:

1. The game is beautiful. Beautiful. It doesn't really come through on the videos. Just, every blade of grass, every streak of rain. Damn. I was worried my game wouldn't run it at all, given that other thread here, but it runs the game just fine on medium and at about 20fps on ultra, with some stutter. Reducing the screen resolution raises performance and cuts load times dramatically, and the game is just stunning.

2. The audio (even though I have it at 2) is probably even more impressive than the visuals. So much high quality ambient crap bouncing around my office last night my wife actually thought that I was having a meeting (yeah, at 1am. She's weird when she's unexpectedly awakened. Anyway...). The sound design, the number of ambient conversations and sounds, this place feels alive the way Kirkwall never did, and that was my biggest gripe with DA2.

3. Combat is just okay, to me. I lose my mouse cursor in combat a lot. Auto-lock helps, but the combat experience is pretty opaque to me. The tactical view helps, because combat is quite fast-paced, but as many have said, you can't zoom out that high, and that really negatively impacts the effectiveness of it. Your mileage may vary.

4. Although the visuals are amazing, I don't understand why all the hair is so shiny. It kinda sucks. It makes me regret my beard! With as good as this game looks otherwise, I can't imagine the shiny hair is intentional. Perhaps it's a setting I'm using (or not using) or a bug, but it's an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise amazing-looking game.

5. I jumped off a cliff and then slid down the face of it. That was rad.

6. There is an overwhelming amount of **** to do immediately after the prologue completes. It's incredible, I love it. But it's very daunting.

I think to reduce the shiny hair you increase mesh style?

Controls can be like DA2 minus point&click displacement when in action mode, no auto-attack in action mode (unless you keep a key pressed) and the added features. You'll have to rebind the Q/E and A/D keys, because for some reasons they are inverted the strafe and turn keys. You will also have to change your "action key" (space by default in DA2) because that's now the jumping key.

I've got several hours of work to get through yet before I can try it out myself so eagerly devouring what get's posted here. Sounds to me like KBM will take some getting used to but I am a persistent sort of bugger so I will tough it out till I get acclimated to it.

It's interesting that opinion here seems a bit more levelheaded than over in the "spoilers" section where everyone seems to be having an emotional meltdown about the game.

LOL, are they really? Well, you'll see for yourself in a few hours I guess. I'm so pleased that BioWare was able to rebound like this. And yes, the keyboard/mouse combo does take some getting used to, it seems counterintutitve. But only a couple hours in and I'm mostly fine with it, other than the cursor loss in combat.

When the camera falls do you need to reload or switching camera mode resets its location?

Switching the camera mode back works, though I've heen enjoying finding a path back up. Reminds me of driving the Mako.

I wanted to play in tatical cam all the time, but almost everybody is complaining about it with keyboard and mouse...

:(

My only real complaint about the Tac Cam is that it doesn't follow the characters when they move. If you click to.move, you have to move the camera manually.

I'll probably get used to that.

Also, you can't select a character by clicking on him. You have to use the portraits.

And you can't zoom out far enough unless you bring the camera down. Despite BioWare saying (quite some time ago) that the camera would be free roaming, that's not entirely true.

Initial impression is that the spirit of Dragon Age as a CRPG is dead.

Fantastic thus far. All I'm gonna say. Just fantastic. PS4 here; everything seems to be in order. I was hooked pretty quickly and I'm digging the amount of dialogue available. Even the "non-cinematic" conversations aren't bothering me as much as I thought they would, although obviously ideally I would have preferred them to all be cinematic.

I'm planning on hopping off of the forums until I'm done, for fear of spoilers and in lieu of the likelihood that they'll largely be populated by negativity for some time, as it generally the way of things post-release. I'll probably check the ME3 board daily and I'll keep up with PMs because I have friends here, so if you have further questions and for whatever strange reason you've decided I'm the guy to ask then go ahead and hit me up! Should warn you though, I'm the wrong person to discuss combat with. It's an atmospherically fitting element to me in the games I play -- a means to an end -- nothing more.

I'm glad I bought it for both the PS4 and my PC.  (wife wants to play it too).

I think I'll start out on the PS4 and hopefully they will fix the PC version this week.

I admit I was a bit skeptical about the rebalanced healing, but, having wandered around the hinterlands on normal for many hours, I never ran out of potions or had to backtrack to get more (in fact most fights with two or three enemies around the same level as me, I didn't loose any health in my party at all. Even the two fade rifts I closed didn't prove to be a challenge as long as I used basic tactics). The only time I saw the you died screen was when I went to a bad place at level four and got killed by a level twelve mountain goat thing. I suspect he was there to keep out players who aren't leveled for that content yet, even though I had a quest pointing behind him, and he was hiding behind a crag of rock and attacked me during a fight with some level five wolves.

Controls were a bit hard to get used to (I still have problems looking up at a fade rift to close it while in tactical mode), but the first area does a pretty good job of hitting you with easy fights to let you settle into the rhythm before you have to do anything difficult.

And Sera's recruitment mission is amazing. Without spoilers, it's like Lukas Kristjanson (the man who gave us Aveline's "courting" Donnic) liquefied Terry Pratchett and poured the resulting mess over his keyboard, then crafted the results into a glorious five minute period where nothing on the planet takes itself seriously.

Why? What sort of thing are they saying (spoiler-permitting, of course)? I daren't set foot in there. Is it plot stuff? Gameplay stuff? PC controls stuff?

No not really spoilery stuff. More just raging about gameplay stuff and to be fair some of it sounds like valid issues with how the UI is for PC but there are also silly things like creatures and foes not being killable for low-level parties. Coming off of Divinity: Original Sin where you could easily turn a corner with your lvl 3 party and get wiped in under 20 seconds by a lvl 8 party of wolves or encounter invulnerable "death knights" (killable later in game) this isn't something likely to jarr me but it does apparently jarr some. Others seem to feel compelled to do every minor quest and then complain that because they lacked the willpower to ignore these staples of the rpg genre that, that must mean this game is ****. I made my comment because this section of the forum seemed a little calmer even when people were critiquing the game's first day flaws.

6 Hours in so far:

1) Graphics and Sound are absolutely top notch, especially on a beefy PC.

2) Characters are tremendous, but that is to be expected.

3) Keyboard and Mouse controls are very very awkward. Especially if playing a melee character. The lack of an auto-attack really kills it, imo. Pressing the basic attack button simply causes your character to stand his ground and swing his sword into air. It will take a LOT to get use to this system, having recently played DA:O and DAII. Tac Cam is very difficult to use.

4) That tactics system is worthless unfortunately. Having 2 mages who can both cast barrier is an exercise in futility. Outside of disabling companion AI altogether, there is no reliable way to micromanage skills usage.

5) Cutscene lock at 30fps. This will not bother consoles much, but shifting from 60fps gameplay to 30fps cutscene on the pc is very jarring. And like someone mentioned, it still looks way too jerky to be truely 30fps.

Hmmm...

Well I'm glad I'm reading all this before I get the game. I'm a PC kb+m player, so I'll do a little fiddling around with the bindings and see how I get on. Hopefully there's be a patch pretty soon to deal with the worst of the bugs (and maybe allow walking for the PC...?!).

I do own a controller, but I've never actually used it...

Points 3 and 4 have me very worried. With each person commenting on it, just keeps getting worse. :( Ugh...are the controls near unplayable or something you think we can get used to as you put in the hours?

Btw check http://www.reddit.co...cene_framerate/for a possible 30 fps solution on cutscenes. Haven't tried it myself since I can't play yet, but worth a shot I guess.

I think if you do the key binding to something more DAO-familiar, the differences won't seem so jarring. It's not an ideal set up mainly because (to get the equivalent of holding tab down in the earlier games) you have to spam the loot scanner. It's the same idea. The worst part is the lack of auto-loot. You can see it but you have to walk up to it manually to loot it.

After reading these impressions im thinking about botching the KB/M for xbox controller.

I would recommend it, and that's heresy coming from me.  After an hour of messing around with the keybindings I just gave up and plugged a controller in.  The only other criticism I had with the little time I have spent with the game so far is the fps lock in cut scenes, apparently there's a fix for that though.

I also had problems with the AI being wonky/contrary, but I just turned turned it off completely and micromanage everything now.

That wasn't there in previous games either so that was to be expected. Though those of us on the PC did have mods for it on Origins.

The latter. I could definitely get used to it, I just didn't see any reason to because playing with a controller is simply a lot smoother and more enjoyable (and I'm usually a KB/M guy).

Controls on the PC are going to be, at best, difficult to get used to for most people. Some weird decision-making going on there.

Yea, only got to play for about 15 minutes so far, and have to agree with this.  Needs more customization capabilities in the controls.
