I played the EA Access trial of DAI and early on in the game Varric referred to my female Hawke as "a guy". Someone else in the Scuttlebutt forum reported the same comment for their female Hawke. Everything else Varric said regarding DA2 in that conversation was accurate, though he made no mention of Hawke's romance.
Possible bug in DAI import: Varric thinks my female Hawke is "a guy"

I think the only way to know for sure is get to the point where you get to customize Hawke. If she turns up as a guy and can't get a female to appear, then it means it's a bug. However they might have just missed/forgotten to make a he/she variable for that line for Varric.

Well, Lady Insanity has a video showing a female imported Hawke. I haven't watched it so I don't know if it's a custom Hawke or not...

Yeah, I'm afraid that's the only way to get a definitive answer. It may be silly, but I'll be disappointed if I invest 50 hours or more into a playthrough only to meet a character who isn't my Hawke. I'm probably going to cross my fingers and plow ahead.

From what I hear, you meet Hawke about 20 hours in.

I just had this happen, in some of Varric's "non-formal" dialogue, he said something like, "The guy who blew up the Chantry was a friend of mine." which instantly confused me and made me think I had somehow imported the wrong world state or something(I haven't). Really hoping my Hawke doesn't shoe up as a guy,

I'd say the guy who blew up the chantry was Anders, not Hawke, so that seems okay to me.

Right, duh. Don't know why I thought he was talking about Hawke. Kinda wish I could ask him that question again to repeat the dialogue so I can see if I got the quote right or if my brain is just going since I've been up all night playing the game.

Either that or Varric was the one who blew up the chantry and is just covering his tracks double.

I have Lelianna telling me my Warden was Female and Dead. I had exported world state, unchanged, several times before even starting, so no idea if there are several bugs related to world states.

That sounds like you have a default world state somehow. Perhaps you imported from the wrong Origins account?I have Lelianna telling me my Warden was Female and Dead.
